Once the vampire was man’s deadliest natural enemy, but the dual nature of the revenant pathogen has given rise to a new scourge. Only one man stands in the way of humanity’s total annihilation.

In this ambitious and wildly original debut -- part social-political satire, part international mystery -- a new virus turns people into something a bit more than human, upending society as we know it. This panoramic fictional oral history begins with one small mystery: the body of a young woman...

We know that we pose a threat to humanity. But so does every person with a common cold stepping into a metro on their way to work in the morning. We don’t ask to be hailed as heroes, or the next evolutionary step in human life, because we sure aren’t that. We just ask for the same fair treatment any patient gets, no matter what their disease might be. The humans call us zombies. We call ourselves humanz.

Before we begin, let me tell you it is illegal to be overweight. Still with me? Good, now not only is it illegal to be overweight, but now all fast and junk food has been outlawed. If you are between the ages of eight and 29, and not following the law, you will be sent to a government run weight-loss camp. Trust me, this is not a camp you want to go to. Twins Jenn and Will have been hiding very well, they grew up in a state run facility and ran away before anyone could send them to camp. Unfortunately, they could only run for so long. They have been caught and sent to camp.

Alec Reid’s ghosts of the 21st century seldom lurk in old houses or waft across chilly moors. His dark tales may breathe alongside the supernatural, but they take place in broad daylight, in our daily lives. Their themes include dead warriors resurrected via Bluetooth, Rumpelstiltskin in the suburbs, an algorithmic fear of ghosts, and the shattered dreams of immortality. The world they describe is the one you inhabit, but you would live in terror were you to recognize it for what it is.
