On July 17, 1957, an Air Force RB-47 carrying six officers crossed Louisiana during a return mission when pilot Lewis D. Chase and co-pilot James H. McCoid reported an intense white light with a bluish tint passing ahead of the aircraft.

Electronic-monitor operator Frank B. McClure had also reported unusual radar-like emissions received by the RB-47's passive direction-finding equipment. Later, near Dallas–Fort Worth, Chase diverted toward another light and contacted the Duncanville Air Defense radar station, call sign Utah.

The surviving records preserve visual reports, selected receiver bearings, a reported ground-radar exchange, and a major documentary conflict: the crew-side summary says Duncanville confirmed a target, while the station's own teletype reports negative contact with the object.

On October 4, 1967, seventeen-year-old Laurie Wickens and other witnesses near Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia, saw a row of flashing lights descend toward the Atlantic. Wickens did not report a UFO. He found a telephone and called the RCMP because he believed an aircraft had crashed into the water.

Police officers responded to the shoreline. Fishermen launched boats. Canadian Coast Guard Cutter 101 joined the search. Witnesses and responders reported a light on or near the water, and later accounts described a patch or trail of yellowish foam. Yet no survivors, aircraft wreckage, bodies, baggage, oil, or identifiable debris were found. Authorities checked for missing civilian and military aircraft and found none. A Department of National Defence memorandum later stated that a preliminary investigation had not attributed the sighting to a flare, float, aircraft, or any known object.

Canadian naval divers then searched the seabed off Shag Harbour. Their publicly reported result was negative.

Decades later, researchers Chris Styles and Don Ledger uncovered records and collected testimony alleging that an unidentified submerged object continued toward Shelburne, near Cold War underwater-surveillance facilities. That larger account is dramatic, but its central evidence comes from later recollections and anonymous sources rather than publicly available operational records.

The documented question remains narrower and more difficult: did a physical object enter the ocean off Shag Harbour, or did sincere witnesses and rescuers construct a crash interpretation around distant lights whose source and position were never established?

In 2014 and early 2015, Navy aviators assigned to Carrier Air Wing One reported recurring unidentified contacts over Atlantic training ranges off the U.S. East Coast. Many of the encounters occurred while F/A-18 Super Hornet squadrons, including VFA-11, were operating from Naval Air Station Oceana before the USS Theodore Roosevelt deployed in March 2015.

Former Navy pilots Ryan Graves and Danny Accoin later described unfamiliar radar tracks, attempted intercepts, and contacts that appeared on more than one aircraft system. Graves also relayed a report that an unknown sphere-like object containing a dark cube passed between two Super Hornets flying in close formation. The complete safety report said to have followed has not been publicly released.

On January 21, 2015, Navy aircraft recorded the infrared videos later called GIMBAL and GOFAST. The Pentagon authenticated and formally released both videos in 2020. AARO now concludes that GOFAST did not show anomalous speed, but has not definitively identified the object. GIMBAL remains publicly listed as unresolved, even though a plausible sensor explanation exists for its apparent rotation.
