I was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic at the age of 23 after serving 6 years in the RAF. This series of podcasts will take you through my journey since 1988, the highs and lows of my life and how often poor management of my diabetes may have influenced events.

If you are a type 1 diabetic or know someone who is, I hope my story may be able to help you or them.

Would love to have your input or questions as I go through this journey.

  • When Diabetes and Life Collide: From CEO to Crutches
    Oct 20 2026

Episode 14 continues the story after selling the company: consulting work and setting up job-board sites brought income while a recession and personal financial strain contributed to a failing marriage and a move to London for work.

Medically, the episode covers diabetes complications discovered during routine checks—loss of hair on the lower legs from neuropathy and retinal bleeds treated with multiple laser sessions—and the precautions taken to protect his feet.

In February 2013 he suffered extreme neuropathic pain that left him unable to walk. Treatments with gabapentin and tramadol helped little; long waits for neurology prolonged the crisis until pregabalin was prescribed and the pain finally subsided. Episode 15 will discuss the neuropathic period in more detail and pregabalin’s later side effects.
