What do we imagine a victim of rape or abuse looks like? In this episode, I want us to think about the idea of the “perfect victim” - the person who behaves exactly as we expect a victim to behave.
I share part of my own story from a time when, from theoutside, I probably didn't look much like a victim at all. I was partying, exploring my sexuality, making mistakes and trying to find some control after years of abuse.
People are complicated. We can make good decisions andbad decisions. We can look as though we're coping when we're falling apart underneath.
None of those things determines whether someone was raped or abused.
So what happens when the people we see, hear, or know don't fit the picture we've been taught to expect?
And what if there never was a “perfect victim” in the firstplace?
I'd love you to follow along and join in the conversation.
