The seventy-two spirits of the Ars Goetia are frequently presented as an intact ancient hierarchy inherited from King Solomon. The surviving record tells a more complicated story of medieval manuscripts, Renaissance printing, anonymous compilers, altered names, shifting ranks, added spirits, and increasingly elaborate ritual diagrams.

In 1577, Johann Weyer printed Pseudomonarchia Daemonum in Basel. His catalogue contained sixty-nine named spirits, not seventy-two, and he reported withholding practical material so curious readers would be unable or discouraged from imitating ritual operations. Yet Weyer's text became a major route through which an older spirit catalogue entered print, passed through Reginald Scot's English translation, and helped shape the later Ars Goetia.

The central mystery is numerical. Why did the recognizable seventeenth-century Ars Goetia tradition settle on seventy-two spirits? Later manuscripts associated with Thomas Rudd pair those spirits with seventy-two angels derived from a much older Jewish divine-name tradition, but that pairing does not prove why the Goetia list took its final form. The documents preserve evidence for both deliberate symbolic arrangement and ordinary textual accumulation, while leaving the decisive missing link unresolved.
