If you were a New York sports fan on the night of Monday, October 27, 1986, you had plenty of reasons to celebrate!
At Shea Stadium in Queens, the New York Mets were facing the Boston Red Sox in Game 7 of the World Series. After a dramatic postseason run and an unforgettable comeback in Game 6, the Mets had one final obstacle standing between them and a championship.
Meanwhile, across the Hudson River at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the New York Giants were battling their NFC East rivals, the Washington Redskins, on Monday Night Football.
Two stadiums. Two major sporting events. And one remarkable night when New York was the center of the sports world!
In this episode of Historically Speaking Sports, hosts Dana Auguster and Charles Combs talk about that night and what made this night so special in the annals of sports history.
Later in the show, Charles and Dana talk about another great sports day in the history of New York City in the mid 1990s. However in this case, it was overshadowed by events taking place 3000 miles away on a freeway in Los Angeles.
