Looking for honest stories about people, not product reviews? You're in the right place.

The Human Diagnostic isn't a how-to HVAC podcast. It's what a 45-year Master Technician notices about people after 90,000 service calls across gas plants, oil rigs, hospital preservation systems, high-rises, feedlots, walk-in freezers, and residential homes all over Central Oklahoma.

Hosted by Dave Hartzell, each episode tells a real story from a real service call. Sometimes he's driving to the job and predicting what he's about to walk into. Sometimes he just left and he's still working through what he saw. Either way, the story turns out to be about more than HVAC.

Topics you'll hear across the season:

✅ The customer nobody wanted to take, and what changed when someone finally did
✅ Why the person researching their broken AC at midnight isn't being difficult, they're scared
✅ What 45 years of walk-ins, weddings, funerals, and broken water heaters teaches you about anxiety
✅ The tech who can fix anything but can't explain it, and why the customer doesn't trust him
✅ The review you can't place, the moment you never forget, the call that changed how you work
✅ What gets lost when we treat people like tickets, and what gets found when we don't

Whether you fix things for a living, manage people who do, or just like good stories from someone who has been everywhere and met everybody, The Human Diagnostic gives you the part of the job that never shows up in an invoice.

  • Same Money, Different Pocket: The Repair She Couldn't Justify
    Oct 22 2026

She had the repair price in one hand and a grocery envelope in the other, and I could tell which one was going to win.

It was the first hot week of spring, the kind of April where the wheat is green and the afternoons climb into the high eighties before anybody is ready for it. The house was a brick ranch on the edge of town, built back when every house on the street got the same floor plan. A young couple lived there with two little kids. He worked long shifts out in the oil field. She ran the household money.

The AC had quit the night before. Indoor blower running, outdoor unit sitting dead quiet. When I got out there the problem was not hard to find. The outdoor fan motor had failed, and the compressor had been cooking itself trying to run without it.

This is a common repair. Nothing exotic. I told her what I found, showed her the motor, and wrote up what it was going to cost. A few hundred dollars, the kind of number that does not sound like much until it is your number.

She looked at it for a long time. Then she said, "Not this week."

I have heard "not this week" thousands of times, and I have learned it means different things. Sometimes it means "I don't trust you." Sometimes it means "I need to ask my husband." This time it meant something else, and she told me straight.

There were envelopes on the fridge. Groceries. Gas. Kids. Bills. She paid cash out of each one, and when an envelope was empty, that category was done until payday. The repair would have to come out of the grocery envelope, and the grocery envelope had a family of four depending on it.

I respected that. I told her the house would get warm but nobody was in danger, I left her the written quote, and I drove off.

Two days later she called. "Can you come back out? Our tax refund came in."

Core line: "For some families that is just another way of putting the cost in a different column, spread out instead of all out of one week."

  • The Dizzy Spell She Swore the Heat Pump Was Causing
    Oct 22 2026

The phone rang at seven minutes after two, and the man on the other end could not get a whole sentence out, so the first thing I asked him to do was walk to the thermostat and read me the number.

This was the first hard freeze of last November, the kind that rides in on a north wind and takes Kingfisher from fifty degrees at supper to twenty by bedtime. Brick ranch east of town, built in the seventies, a heat pump I had put in a few years back with electric strips for backup. The homeowner was a widower in his seventies, lived alone, careful, the kind of man who keeps every receipt in a binder with tabs.

Nothing had failed. I did not know that yet, and neither did he.

What he had heard was this. A low hum that had been there all evening. Then a sharp click. Then a sound he described as a jet going over low. He got up, looked out the back window, and under the floodlight there was a cloud pouring off the outdoor unit. He took it for smoke.

His heart took off. His hands went cold. He got short of breath, and that was the part that scared him most, because his wife had died of a heart attack in that house two winters before, and now here he was, not able to breathe, with the furnace about to blow.

He said those words. The furnace is about to blow. It is a heat pump, and there is nothing in it that blows up, but that is not a fact a man can use at two in the morning with his pulse at one-thirty.

I told him what the after-hours call would cost, and he said come anyway. I told him to go sit in the front room, away from that window, and I would be there in twenty minutes. By the time I pulled in, the cloud was gone and the unit was humming along like nothing had happened, because nothing had.

Core line: "Clark and his colleagues took people with panic disorder and people without it, sat them in a room, and had both groups breathe fast and deep on purpose for a couple of minutes."

  • The Heat Pump Was Fine. His Body Knew Something Was Off
    Oct 22 2026

She had a blanket over her knees at two in the afternoon, and the thermostat four steps down the hall said seventy-two.

First real cold snap of October, the kind where the wind comes down out of Kansas and finds every gap a house has. Brick ranch from the early nineties, north of town, long and low, with the living room on the north end: three outside walls and a run of windows looking out at drilled wheat. A retired couple, both of them home all day now. He called me. He said the furnace was fine, he just needed somebody to tell his wife that.

That is how he put it on the phone, and I have heard that sentence, one way or another, more times than I can count in 47 years.

She was in the living room when I got there. Fleece pullover, blanket, both hands around a coffee mug she was not drinking. He met me in the hallway in a T-shirt and pointed at the thermostat. Seventy-two. Set at seventy-two, holding seventy-two. "You tell me," he said.

Another company had been out the week before. They checked the furnace, checked the gas pressure, checked the temperature rise, and wrote on the ticket that the system was operating normally. Then they told her to turn it up if she was cold. She had tried that. At seventy-six he was sweating in the hallway and she still had the blanket.

So I did not start at the furnace. I asked her where she sits and when she feels it and where on her body. The couch, she said, from about three in the afternoon on, and it was her feet and her face more than anything. Her feet never warmed up. Her face felt like somebody had a window cracked.

Then I went and sat where she sits.

Core line: "He had people lie in a scanner and hold a small cooled metal probe in one hand while he stepped the temperature down a few degrees at a time, nothing painful, just cool to cold."
