In June 1997, what was supposed to be a final carefree senior-class trip turned into one of California’s most shocking water park disasters. After dozens of Napa High students attempted a dangerous tradition known as “clogging,” a section of the Banzai Pipeline waterslide collapsed nearly four stories above the ground, injuring 32 students and killing 18-year-old Quimby Ghilotti.
In todays episode we look at what led up to the collapse, why the students attempted the stunt, the rescue effort, the investigation, the lawsuits that followed, and how the tragedy helped change amusement park safety in California.
