We usually focus on the battles and politicians, but the real engine of Athens was its courts. In this episode, we look at how ordinary citizens were selected by lot to serve as jurors in the Heliaia. We explore the role of thekleros, the massive scale of these assemblies, and the tension between democracy and efficiency. Lucas and Luna discuss the daily life of a juror, the payment system that allowed the poor to participate, and why Sparta viewed this chaotic system with such suspicion. From the Pnyx to the lawcourts, we uncover the mechanical heart of Athenian democracy. #AthenianDemocracy #Heliaia #kleros #lotterySystem #juryDuty #Perikles #Pnyx #AthensHistory #AncientGreece #DirectDemocracy #SpartaVsAthens #PoliticalHistory #ClassicalAntiquity #GreekCulture #CivicEngagement #Thucydides #Ostracism #FexingoHistory #History Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
