Welcome to the CineMcCollough Podcast - specifically all things original Star Trek - episode reviews and rankings, movie reviews and rankings, and Star Trek novel reviews and rankings, compiled over the past six years as an ongoing project of fandom.

Lifelong Star Trek fans and Friends "Lord Rob" McCollough and Patrick "Butch" Brennan grew up in the 1980s with the original 1960s Star Trek. Having been born less than a year after Star Trek went off the air, they actually grew up on reruns of the original series, with an occasional theatrical movie ever few years, as well as the thing that REALLY bonded them, dozens of Star Trek novels that were released throughout the 1970s and 1980s and today.

When Rob and Butch decided to start a podcast, fortuitously in December 2019, right before the COVID pandemic, they had a few topics that seemed like obvious topics - Star Trek being the primary one (along with the films of Alfred Hitchcock, the sport of boxing, and movies in general. Being lifelong list-makers, Butch and Rob had ranked all 79 original Star Trek episodes on the way home from their 30th high school reunion in 2018, so they recorded their episode reviews as a countdown of the entire series run, from their least favorite episode to their most favorite (inviting our pal Jeremy "Jay Dawg" Forman, who is a casual Trek fan, to join us). Later came reviews of all 14 Bantam Books Star Trek novels, followed by reviews and rankings of the great Pocket Books Star Trek novels from their childhood, starting with the first 50, selected randomly for re-reading, discussion and ranking in what is now their current ongoing Star Trek podcast project. We have even done reviews of the Peter Pan Star Trek record-and-book adventures from the mid-1970s!

This podcast feed will include episodes, in recording order, covering th

  • Star Trek original series movie (1979-1991) reviews and rankings;
  • Star Trek novels from Bantam Books (1968-1981) and Pocket Books (1981-1992);

CineMcCollough is what we like to call "podcast in the rough" in that we don't rely on sound clips, or bumper music, or other such trappings - just jump in on each episode and go, relying on our extensive knowledge of the franchise and preparatory notes for each episode, movie and novel.

  • Star Trek Pocket Novel #29: "Triangle"
    23 Oct 2026

    After a bit of a layoff, Butch and Rob return with the fourth and final novel by perhaps the earliest writing team of Star Trek novelists - Sondra Marshak and Myrna Culbreth - 1983's "Triangle."

    We previously covered their two Omne novels - "The Price of the Phoenix" and "The Fate of the Phoenix" in season 1 (Journeys to Bantam) and covered their earlier Pocket Books novel "The Prometheus Design" earlier in season 2. This is the final novel the two produced for Star Trek, though they also wrote a couple nonfiction Trek books. Sadly, we lost Myrna last year on Halloween night, but Sondra is still with us.

    "Triangle" is a book that is well in line with how Marshak and Culbreth wrote the first three - lots of Kirk and Spock and not much else from the crew, the galaxy, or perhaps even the universe, is once again in peril, and once again the authors treat Kirk and especially Spock as messiah figures that are the only hope to save us all. That plus more angst and sexual tension than you can shake a stick at.

    It becomes quickly apparent that Rob and Butch are not big fans of this book - but give it a listen and decide for yourself!

  • Star Trek Pocket Novel #28: The Abode of Life (#6)
    20 Aug 2026

    Our next mission takes us to a little-traveled portion of the galaxy between the Sagittarius Arm and Orion Arm of the galaxy, where a gravitational anomaly has sent the Enterprise while also crippling it and leaving it potentially stranded. The only hope that the Enterprise crew has is to try and locate the needed supplies, negotiate for their acquisition, and survive an unstable star, all without overturning a carefully-balanced and insular civilization that is both advanced and backward.

    Rob and Butch turned out to be pretty impressed with Lee Corey's only Star Trek Novel, "The Abode of Life." Give us a listen and see if you agree!

  • BONUS - Star Trek Las Vegas 60 Report
    20 Aug 2026

    Rob and Butch have been life long Star Trek fans, and have enjoyed watching and reading Star Trek since 1984. But this summer, August 5-10, they took their wives to Las Vegas and attended their first-ever Star Trek convention, which just so happened to be the 60th Anniversary year since the first broadcast of Star Trek. As a result, the convention was well-attended, with over 6,000 attendees and nearly 200 guests from all across the Star Trek universe and timeline.

    The primary goal was to see the stars who are oldest, and thus are least likely to attend future conferences - William Shatner, George Takei, and Walter Koenig. Alas, Koenig was a late scratch, but we got to see the other two, hear their presentations, and get our picture taken with them. While we were at it, we met all sorts of other Trek personae - actors from all of the series, writers of episodes and novels, production staff, and even a couple of our favorite Star Trek podcasters.

    Give us a listen and see how it compared to your STLV experience, or maybe get inspired to attend next year!
