  • What Causes “Tech Neck” and How to Prevent It
    Sep 23 2026
Hey there, and welcome back. I'm so glad you're tuning in today. I'm Doctor Aaron Dushkin from Heights Chiropractic Center here in Houston, and, you know, today we're talking about something that affects just about everyone I see in my practice these days. We're talking about tech neck. Now, you may have heard that term before and kind of laughed it off. But here's the thing — tech neck is a very real condition, and, honestly, it's causing a lot of unnecessary pain for a lot of people. And the good news is, it's also very preventable. So, you know, let's break this down. Your head weighs somewhere around ten to twelve pounds when it's sitting directly over your shoulders in a neutral position. That's already a decent amount of weight for your neck muscles to support all day long. But, you know, here's where it gets really interesting. Every inch your head tilts forward — like when you're looking down at your phone or leaning toward your computer screen — the effective load on your spine increases dramatically. By the time your head is tilted forward just a few inches, your neck and upper spine can be dealing with the equivalent of forty or even sixty pounds of force. Every single day. Hour after hour. Now, really, think about how often you're looking down at your phone. Scrolling through social media, reading emails, texting someone back. Most people do this for hours a day without even realizing it. And, you know, your body starts to adapt to that position over time. The muscles in the back of your neck get strained and overworked. The muscles in the front get tight and shortened. And your spine starts to slowly lose its natural curve. That's when people start feeling it. You know, neck stiffness. Headaches that won't quit. Tension across the shoulders. Sometimes even tingling or numbness down into the arms. And a lot of people just assume that's normal. That it's just stress, or they slept wrong, or they're getting older. But, honestly, so often, what I find is that posture — specifically forward head posture from prolonged device use — is at the root of it. So, okay, what can you actually do about it? Let me give you a few things you can start today. First, raise your screen. Whether it's your phone or your computer monitor, bring it up to eye level as much as possible. This simple change alone can, really, take a huge amount of stress off your neck and upper back. Second, take movement breaks. Set a timer if you have to. Every thirty minutes or so, stand up, roll your shoulders back, and gently bring your chin toward your chest a few times and then look up toward the ceiling. You know, just a minute or two of movement can make a real difference. Third, pay attention to your chin. A lot of people don't realize they're doing what we call chin poking — where the chin juts forward as you look at a screen. Try tucking your chin back gently, like you're making a slight double chin. That's actually closer to a neutral spine position. It might feel awkward at first, but, you know, it gets easier. Now, here's when I'd really encourage you to come in and see us. If you're already experiencing persistent neck pain, frequent headaches, stiffness that doesn't go away, or any discomfort radiating down your arm — please don't just push through it. Those are signs that your spine may need some attention. And, really, the sooner we catch and address these kinds of imbalances, the better the outcomes tend to be. At Heights Chiropractic Center, we take the time to actually look at what's going on with your posture and your spine. We're not just treating symptoms — we're trying to understand the why behind your discomfort, and then, you know, come up with a plan that works for your life. If you're in the Houston area and you'd like to come in for a consultation, we'd love to meet you. You can find us online or give us a call to schedule.
