When something happens, everyone wants answers. The problem is, the people responsible for providing those answers rarely have all the facts.

I'm Jason Pack.

This is SAY WHAT?, conversations about crisis, media, leadership and public trust with the people who've been there when it mattered.

Episode 3: Inside FBI New York | A Shift With CT 26

What does a day inside the FBI’s largest field office actually sound like?

In Episode 3 of Say What? With Jason Pack, we go back into the archives from my days with the FBI Office of Public Affairs and ride along with the agents and task force officers of CT 26, a counterterrorism squad in the FBI’s New York Field Office.

This is original audio from inside the squad that has not been heard publicly before.

An FBI Special Agent named Brett takes us through a shift as the team sorts through threats that came in overnight, prepares for an arrest, coordinates investigative work and plans for major special events in one of the most complex cities in the world.

There are no actors and no recreation. You will hear the work as it happened and get a rare look at the people behind the badge and the daily decisions that help keep New York safe.

I’ll also take you behind the scenes and add perspective from my own years in the FBI.

Put on your headphones. For this episode, you’re riding along with CT 26.

Say What? With Jason Pack | Episode 2: Inside the FBI Press Office on 9/11 with Paul Bresson

A clear Tuesday morning. Lunch plans with a colleague. A boxy television sitting on top of a filing cabinet.

    Then the second plane hit.

In this episode of Say What?, Jason Pack talks with retired FBI National Press Office Unit Chief Paul Bresson about what he saw, heard and experienced inside FBI Headquarters on September 11, 2001.

Bresson remembers watching the second aircraft strike the World Trade Center, the FBI press-office phone bank lighting up almost immediately, reporters calling with fragments of information, reports of an attack at the Pentagon and the uncertainty gripping Washington as no one knew what might happen next.

He also takes listeners inside an era of crisis communications before social media, when the FBI relied on telephones, fact sheets, press conferences and relationships with reporters while one of the largest investigations in American history unfolded in real time.

One of the most powerful moments comes the following morning. Exhausted after working through the night, Bresson walked through a nearly empty Union Station and saw the enormous newspaper headlines documenting what had happened. Only then, he says, did the historic weight of the previous 24 hours begin to feel real.

Twenty-five years later, the conversation offers lessons that still matter to PIOs and crisis communicators: how to communicate when information is incomplete, what to protect during an active investigation, how the public can become an essential partner and why trust matters when everyone wants answers.

    Episode 1: Inside the FBI

Say What? With Jason Pack | Episode 1: Inside the FBI: A Conversation with FBI Deputy Director Chris Raia

What does the FBI look like from the perspective of one of the people helping lead it?

In the first episode of Say What?, Jason Pack sits down with FBI Deputy Director Chris Raia for a conversation about the Bureau, leadership, public service and the responsibilities that come with serving at the highest levels of federal law enforcement.

Pack brings a unique perspective to the conversation as a retired FBI Supervisory Special Agent, former FBI public affairs leader, crisis communications expert and longtime media professional.

Say What? goes beyond the press release and the sound bite, bringing listeners conversations with the people who lead, communicate and make decisions when the public wants answers.
