The River Girl Podcast gives a voice to our rivers and the people working to protect them.

Hosted by Debbie Campbell, the podcast takes listeners from the rivers of the Cotswolds to waterways across the UK, exploring the challenges facing our rivers, the wildlife that depends on them, and the people working to create positive change.

Drawing on Debbie’s own experience as a river campaigner and community advocate, each episode brings together campaigners, conservationists, fishermen, farmers, scientists, environmental experts and local communities to share their knowledge, experiences and connection to our waterways.

From river pollution and water quality to wildlife, conservation, restoration and the science beneath the surface, The River Girl Podcast makes the issues affecting our rivers accessible while celebrating everything these incredible environments give us.

Debbie also explores what individuals and communities can do to make a difference, while meeting the people dedicating their lives to protecting and restoring Britain’s waterways.

At its heart, the podcast is about reconnecting people with their rivers — understanding them, enjoying them and helping to ensure they are healthy and thriving for generations to come.

Join Debbie by the river and discover the stories, people and passion behind Britain’s waterways.

What can one community do for a river? Debbie Campbell visits Sherborne Brook with Roger, her first volunteer on the Windrush project, to see the difference their work has made. Clearing roadside ditches has helped keep silt out of the water, and Roger has seen more trout return.

Together, they explore the brook’s wildlife and the history it carries through the village, while confronting a new threat from invasive crayfish and the troubling condition of the River Windrush downstream. It’s a conversation about friendship, local action and what happens when people get to know the water on their doorstep.

In this first episode, Debbie shares her own story and explains how a wild swim during lockdown changed the direction of her life. After becoming seriously ill following a swim in the River Windrush, she began investigating what was happening beneath the surface and discovered the scale of the challenges facing local waterways.

She talks about her journey into river campaigning, working with local communities and volunteers, testing water quality, educating schools and building the River Guardians network. Debbie also shares her hopes for a future where families can once again enjoy clean, thriving rivers without worrying about pollution.
