In the final chapter of At the Mountains of Madness by H.P. Lovecraft, Dyer and Danforth flee the ruined Antarctic city in their plane, shaken by what they’ve discovered. As they escape, Danforth looks back and glimpses something so vast and horrifying—hinted to be a surviving Old One or something even worse—that it shatters his sanity. In Chapter 8 of At The Mountains of Madness, Dyer and Danforth explore the ancient alien city and find huge murals that reveal the whole history of the Old Ones: they came from space, built a massive civilization, created the shoggoths as slaves, and eventually got wrecked by shoggoth rebellions and changing Earth conditions. The chapter shifts from scientific curiosity to deep cosmic dread as the explorers realize how tiny humanity is compared to this ancient power — and that something in the city might still be alive.
