Episode 50 Now we are 50 and in pretty good shape, with a stonker of a podcast for you. Girl For Samson – Jehovah Girl For Samson start us off with a great tune. Proper friends of the podcast, mainly because we love their music and they say nice things about me. Yes, I’m that shallow. Go go here digging and you’ll be rewarded. Poppy Marynns feat Corey Jones – All I Want Next up is Poppy Marynns featuring Corey Jones. Poppy has really upped the bar with this one. He just keeps getting better and better, and it shows. Poppy is very into ReverbNation, which is where you will find out all about him and what he’s up to. Ger Eaton – I Thought I’d A Friend In third place is Ger Eaton with a track that is an absolute masterpiece of songwriting and production. Talking of writing, here’s a bit of his bio: Ger Eaton is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, hair stylist and retro-vintage aficionado. This iconic and stylish gentleman is most recently known as keyboardist and guitarist for Dublin alt-rock heroes The Pale. He has long been a revered mainstay of the Irish music scene as a member of Premonition, Las Vegas Basement, Les Marionettes, Pugwash and The Carnival Brothers, alongside numerous solo and collaborative projects. He has recorded and toured extensively with artists including Mundy, Duke Special, Jack L and Fionn Regan, and has played everywhere from Glastonbury Festival to Later with Jools Holland. Following a run of singles throughout the 2020s, Eaton’s debut album Season Changes has arrived via the Dimple Discs label. He describes his sound as “Renaissance Pop” and the album as an old-fashioned break-up record, charting the emotional arc of a long relationship from bloom to winter. Ger is a Bandcamp user, so that’s the best place to head if you want to explore further. Laptop – Confused And finally, the mighty Laptop with Confused. Here are the bio bits: Written in response to January 6, the track captures the psychological whiplash of watching democratic reality fracture in real time, filtered through the perspective of a man glued to the news, overwhelmed by noise, grievance and spectacle. Rather than narrating events, “Confused” documents the mental fallout. Lines such as “They claim that they’re abused” and “Not quite the Reichstag fire” place the song firmly in the present, not as commentary but as diagnosis. Threaded with dry and unsettling irony, the song leaves the listener with a queasy recognition that everyone sounds convinced, everyone sounds wrong, and certainty itself has become the least reliable narrator. Episode 48 We welcome in 2026 with a stonker of an episode. We kick off with Junior VP – Easy Come Easy Go. They say: Junior VP may be a new musical act but their roots lead back to the early 2000s. Songwriter and singer guitarist Ross played in bands with drummer Steven in the space between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Now with cooler, older heads and the inclusion of bass player Andy, the trio have created something really special. Their name comes from the typically American job position of Junior Vice President, which pays tribute to the US college rock and indie emo bands that inspire their sound. Pop hooks, gnarly guitar sounds and super interesting arrangements combine to form something familiar but fresh. Broadly appealing but far from middle of the road. Their debut album Do You Feel the Same? is set to release in 2026, date to be confirmed. With high energy singles such as Easy Come, Easy Go releasing December 12, Junior VP are proving to be ones to watch out for. Just do not ask them to manage your company. You might not think we would play J Flex ft Shay Brown and Hydro D – Champion, but then you would be wrong, wouldn’t you, because we bloody loved it. The British IBM, Mélanie Pain, How Dare You, Cargo Cult The British IBM, Mélanie Pain, How Dare You and Cargo Cult make up Episode 47 and what an episode it is. This is the last normal episode of the year. The next episode will be Chris and my Pick of the Year, followed by a two week break. After that comes the results episode of the Subscribers Choice special. If you want to know more about that, subscribe to the website and all will be revealed. We kick off with The British IBM and Things Change. What a tune. I could not remember where they were from but it turns out they are based in Cambridge. Here is what I managed to glean from the internet. The British IBM officially launched in 2012, led by singer songwriter and retro enthusiast Aidy, alongside David Martin on bass and Scott Wilson on drums. Their debut self titled album was produced with Neil Bugs Rogers and featured the single Animal, which came with a well received animated video. Their track The British IBM gained wider attention after being used in the trailer for the documentary From Bedrooms to Billions, telling the story of the British video games industry. The video featured Iain Lee and paid homage to the BBC film Micro Men. In 2014 Aidy played an expo residency in Las Vegas as part of the Classic Gaming Expo. The following year the band released their second album Psychopaths Dream in Black and White, which featured a wide range of instrumentation including cello, bassoon and sitar. Tracks from the album appeared in TV shows including Life Sentence and How I Met Your Father, as well as the Bedrooms to Billions Amiga Years documentary. After a line up change in 2017, the band released further singles before putting out their third album Play the Game in 2019. During lockdown Aidy began streaming live acoustic performances on Twitch every Friday night, which later inspired their fourth album Friday Night at the Twitch Bar. In 2025 the band released their fifth studio album Things Change, with Aidy documenting the entire process on YouTube. Websitehttps://www.thebritishibm.com/ Next up is Mélanie Pain with Dreamloop, all the way from France. Excellent stuff and a wonderful bio to go with it. Recorded live in the studio with her band, Dreamloop radiates raw and immediate energy. The spontaneity of the performance is clear from the very first note. Mélanie Pain’s voice, always soft and precise, takes on an almost incantatory quality, with the chorus acting as a call to the surface and a glimmer of light in the fog. Balancing pop sweetness with inner vertigo, Dreamloop is described as a refuge song, a way to navigate the night and a delicate exploration of depression and the mental states that confine us. Dreamloop is released on October 30. Mélanie Pain is an iconic voice who has been evolving her solo journey through pop, folk and intimate poetry for over 20 years. She returns with How and Why, a stripped back and luminous album recorded live with longtime bandmates. The record draws inspiration from artists such as Kings of Convenience, Iron and Wine and Emilíana Torrini, and features nine English language tracks exploring emotion, melancholy and rebirth. Touring begins in September 2025, including UK dates in Shoreham On Sea, Southampton, Hastings, Weston Super Mare and London. Born out of Sacramento, California, How Dare You are a modern rock duo blending elements of nu metal and metalcore with raw and unfiltered emotion. Vocalist Noah Duarte teamed up with guitarist Matt English to create a sound that is both therapeutic and confrontational. Their debut single S.O.S is an unfiltered outcry against disconnection, aimed at anyone who has ever felt unheard or invisible. It is a heavy statement about reaching breaking point, reclaiming your voice and refusing to stay silent. Their influences range from Issues, Three Days Grace and Korn through to cinematic film scores, EDM and modern alternative rock. If you are into bands like Bad Omens, Beartooth, I Prevail, Silverstein or Motionless in White, this one is for you. Episode 46 Forensics, Paul Nazole, Amelia Rey, MADANES Episode 46 and counting down to the big Xmas and New year break. As I mentioned in this episode, I will be taking a 2 week break over the Xmas period. I’m not sure about actual dates yet. I love Forensics and I love this track. A few things puzzled me about the song which I go into in the episode. The Forensics are not your stereotypical indie-rock band. Described as “sonically unpredictable” yet “refreshingly real and honest”, their authenticity sets them apart. Massive riffs, pounding drums and soaring vocals underpin a sound that feels both accessible and distinctively their own. Formed in Preston, Lancashire in 2021, the four-piece have built a reputation for high-energy shows at venues including Night & Day Cafe and The Jacaranda, alongside support slots with The Snuts and Andrew Cushin. Fiercely proud of their working-class roots, they are embracing every step of their journey and encouraging fans to come along for the ride.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/forensicsband Next up is a little cracker of a song Nebuchadnezzar by the excellent Paul Nazole. Paul is a singer songwriter from Liverpool of Italian descent whose musical style is built upon intricate and expressive guitar playing and poetic lyricism, weaving together sounds from folk, rock and psychedelia, influenced by The La’s and Michael Head. Well known locally as an accomplished guitarist, Paul has guested and been a member of bands such as The Sneaky Nixon’s, The Stamp, Marvin Powell and Motel Sundown. Now releasing music under his own name, his journey began with debut single Nebuchadnezzar in March 2024. He is sensible enough to have a website that is well worth a visit:https://paulnazole.com/ Third place goes to Amelia Rey with How Am I, and it’s a beauty. I always find it a bit odd when teenage artists tell their age in their bio, but anyway here is the aforementioned bio. How Am I is the soulful debut single from 17-year-old Melbourne-based singer songwriter Amelia Rey, known for her soulful tone, emotional honesty and confident stage presence. Trained formally in vocals and previously part of an all-girl performing group, she has built extensive live experience including a solo appearance at Carols in front of 20,000 people. Amelia has performed with the Army Band and The Nockoffs and now steps forward as a solo artist blending contemporary pop, soulful vocals and emotionally grounded lyricism. The song tells the story of someone aiming for the stars, someone who will do anything to get what they want, even if it means hurting the people that are closest to them. This person wants to “live like a megastar” and “live like they’re on TV” but while you are putting in all your effort to help and support them, they present you with lies and a total lack of caring. Once you become so low that you cannot continue, you will have no option but to walk away and tell them “I’m not gonna waste it all on you”. The next phase will be hard. I had a great time traveling around and despite what idiots may tell you, I felt and was totally safe and had a ball catching all kinds of public transport around the place! This is what I was told about Eugene McGuinness “….had accepted his career in music was over. The end of his deal with Domino Records, followed by a difficult self-released album, fatherhood, and just life generally, saw his personal dreams and ambitions slowly slip out onto the horizon. The song explores themes of identity and belonging, where you come from and where you’re going, in a place that can seem to be fighting against you. Recorded at Liverpool’s Docklands Speed Shop with friend and producer Gajo Paco, the track is lush, warm and cinematic. Tasteful additions of cello, slide guitar and wurlitzer compliment a rich, beautiful melody.
