A gorgeous court can still be a cage, and Montclair by Anderson W. Frost proves it fast. We step into the Kingdom of Vyrune, where noble houses protect ancient traditions that look refined on the surface but are rotten underneath. Keeping things spoiler free, we map the setup: a Marquis with a buried past, a yearly “offering” to forest spirits, and a line of young women summoned from the countryside like it’s an honor instead of a threat. We talk through the tight cast that makes this fantasy novella feel so intense. Damien de Montclair is our favorite kind of morally gray character, the kind who never hands you a clean motive and always seems to be playing a longer game. Sabine, his trusted right hand and lover, becomes the heart of the story for us, because her loyalty is real, but so is her growing suspicion. Winifred, a baker’s daughter marked as strange and unstable by her town, brings another layer, especially as she confronts what people call madness and what might be something else entirely. The atmosphere also surprised us in the best way. Instead of sprawling epic fantasy travel, Montclair leans into court intrigue with Regency and Edwardian energy, wealth, rules, and ceremony, while magic feels rare enough to be startling. That choice pushes the book toward mystery thriller pacing, where the tension comes from inference, quiet discoveries, and the question we keep circling: is Damien moving toward redemption, or is he becoming the monster the system needs?
