Award-winning voice actor George Washington III has built an impressive career, lending his rich baritone to major brands, documentaries, video games, and more. He's voiced campaigns for Nike, McDonald's, Gatorade, and Amazon Prime, and gamers may recognize him as Green Lantern John Stewart in DC Universe Online.

But George's journey to becoming a full-time voice actor was anything but a straight line.

In this episode of the Mike Lenz VO Podcast, George shares how his background in opera, banking, and education eventually led him to pursue voice acting full time. We talk about the challenges of building a creative career while working other jobs, the importance of having people who believe in you, and why persistence matters more than most people realize.

George also shares what it meant to voice a character he'd admired since childhood, his experience contributing to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and why he believes human emotion and connection will continue to matter in an industry increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence.

We also explore the value of diversifying your voiceover work, finding opportunities in unexpected places, and why even successful voice actors have to keep auditioning, marketing, and developing their craft.

Whether you're just getting started in voice acting or have been working in the industry for years, George's story offers a thoughtful reminder that building a sustainable career takes time, patience, and a willingness to keep going when things get difficult.
