In episode two of season nine of the Loveshaped Life podcast, Nathan and Bob dive into Jesus’ corrective teaching on religious performance and the liberating reality that God is for people rather than against them. Rather than viewing faith as an exhausting checklist of demands to earn divine favor, the hosts explore how Jesus fundamentally reframes God as an approachable, sustaining parent who meets humanity with constant compassion instead of punitive scorekeeping.

The conversation unpacks how underlying fear distorts both our view of God and our daily relationships with fellow human beings, often turning natural human failures into permanent personal shame. By examining practical illustrations from everyday parenting, Nathan and Bob demonstrate why spiritual growth requires shifting away from legalistic control toward genuine trust, warning listeners against the subtle danger of turning grace itself into yet another rigid performance standard.

The hosts offer practical guidance for anyone who feels exhausted by religious pressure, inviting listeners to move beyond passive mental agreement into an active, lived experience of divine affection. Ultimately, the episode encourages individuals to embark on a transformative journey of seeing, experiencing, and extending love in daily interactions, resting fully in the life-changing truth that God remains present, committed, and completely on their side.

In episode one of season nine of the Loveshaped Life podcast, Bob and Nathan dive into Matthew 7, commonly recognized as part of Jesus's Sermon on the Mount or inaugural address. Rather than treating judgment as a simple behavior to avoid, the hosts explore how Jesus exposes an entire operating system built on criticism, comparison, and self-protection — and offers something radically different in its place.

The conversation contrasts a self-centered way of relating, driven by rules and quiet condemnation, with a God-centered life shaped by grace, mercy, compassion, and humility. But the real shift happens through four practices: cultivating self-awareness before engaging others, communicating mindfully by becoming quick to hear and slow to speak, engaging authentically through curiosity and real listening, and creating respectful boundaries without losing compassion. The plank and the speck become a picture of moral blindness, while the warning about pearls before pigs reframes discretion not as withholding truth, but as protecting both people and message through wisdom and timing.

Listeners walk away with a practical framework for love-shaped relationships. Prayer and honest self-reflection clear the way for seeing yourself and others accurately. Listening with real curiosity instead of judgment transforms how you show up in conversations. Knowing when to step back rather than force a conversation becomes an act of love itself. The episode invites anyone tired of criticism-fueled relationships to consider a different way of seeing — one shaped less by self-righteousness and more by these four practices that honor both grace and wisdom.

In this episode of the Loveshaped Life podcast, hosts Nathan, Bob, and Jan explore Jesus’s teaching on worry-free living. They examine how we can’t truly serve two masters—specifically the pull between our values and money—revealing that this tension determines what controls our decisions and where we find security. Financial anxiety can compromise our core values when income or reputation is threatened.

Nathan provides helpful context: for the original audience of Jesus’s teaching, concerns about food, drink, and clothing weren’t abstract worries but matters of literal survival. The teaching uses nature examples—birds of the air and lilies of the field—to reframe how we think about care and provision. The hosts emphasize that worry is unproductive, robbing time and energy without solving problems. Bob shares construction business stories illustrating how worst-case scenarios rarely materialize, yet worry traps us in cycles that “give you something to do, but doesn’t get you anywhere.”

Crucially, the hosts clarify that worry-free living doesn’t mean achieving a problem-free existence—life brings unavoidable hardship. Rather, it means stepping into a larger perspective where we recognize God is at work in the circumstances of our lives. Being consumed with survival blinds us to relationships and service opportunities around us. The hosts encourage daily trust in God’s care, acknowledging that yesterday’s victories don’t sustain today’s challenges. They conclude by inviting listeners to rest in God’s gentle care—one who knows our needs, values us deeply, and invites us to rest rather than being controlled by anxiety about survival.

In this episode of Loveshaped Life, Nathan sits down with Bob and Jan to explore a powerful idea: how the lens you look through shapes your entire life.

They dig into Jesus's teaching: "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness."

Jesus isn't talking about physical sight—he's talking about perception. It's the mental filter through which we see reality and make sense of our lives.

The conversation spans from historical figures who missed what was right in front of them to how social media feeds keep us trapped in narrow viewpoints. From how jealousy distorts our relationships to how love and clarity can transform our inner world.

Bob shares his journey from fearing judgment to discovering compassion. Jan reflects on choosing comfortable illusions over difficult truths. Nathan unpacks how the content we consume literally shapes who we're becoming—and why stepping back from the noise matters.

We explore:

• Why perception is more powerful than you think

• How social media algorithms narrow what we see without us realizing it

• The real difference between consequences and punishment

• Practical ways to see more clearly through four principles: See, Meditate, Accept, and Rest

• What it looks like to build your life on what's actually true, not what's trending

When you see clearly—especially when you see love and goodness—your whole life changes. Whether you're skeptical, curious, searching, or just open to a different perspective—this conversation invites you to examine the lens you're looking through.

In episode two of season eight of the Loveshaped Life podcast, Nathan, Bob, and special guest Jan dive into Jesus’ revolutionary teaching on wealth from Matthew 6:19-21, exploring what it means to build treasure that actually lasts. Rather than treating this as a simple warning against materialism, the hosts unpack how Jesus offers a complete reframing of what constitutes real wealth - moving from earthly possessions that decay and disappear to eternal treasure that transforms both present and future.

The conversation explores three core areas of lasting wealth that Jesus identifies: character development (who we’re becoming when no one’s watching), blessing others through service and generosity, and experiencing genuine relationship with God. Bob emphasizes the crucial distinction between reputation (how others perceive us, especially on social media) and character (who we actually are behind closed doors), noting that character determines destiny in ways that earthly wealth never can. Jan shares a powerful personal story of discovering that true forgiveness - and the capacity to love like Jesus loves - only came through daily time with God, revealing how heavenly treasure isn’t just about the future but transforms how we live today.

The hosts offer practical guidance for building this lasting wealth, starting with accepting Jesus’ offer of forgiveness for the guilt and shame that weighs us down, then developing the rhythm of receiving God’s love and sharing it with others. Perfect for anyone who’s felt the emptiness of chasing worldly success markers or wondered what really matters in the long run, this episode reframes wealth as the capacity to love well, know God deeply, and invest in what can’t be taken away.

In the Season 8 premiere of our Loveshaped Life podcast, hosts Bob and Nathan explore Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount teaching on fasting from Matthew 6. Joined by Jan, who offers a non-pastoral perspective, “Power in Pause” challenges listeners to reconsider fasting as intentional connection with God rather than performative religion. The hosts unpack Jesus’s critique of hypocritical religious leaders who fasted publicly for social recognition, contrasting this with authentic spirituality that emphasizes internal transformation.

The episode explores fasting beyond food abstinence as a holistic practice creating space to pause and gain spiritual clarity. Through personal testimonies, Bob, Nathan, and Jan discuss various fasting forms—from traditional food restrictions to social media detox—highlighting how these pauses restore self-control and create opportunities for spiritual breakthrough. They draw parallels between Christian practices and mindfulness while emphasizing that transformation comes through active engagement with God who heals and reshapes from within.

“Power in Pause” invites listeners to move beyond religious performance toward authentic spiritual journey. The hosts challenge audiences to pause deliberately, creating spaces where God can work. By dismantling performative spirituality and championing intimate faith, the episode offers a refreshing perspective that is intellectually rigorous and deeply personal. The core message: true spiritual transformation happens through humble, intentional moments of surrender and openness to God’s inner working.
