A raw and real time chat between PaPa Mac and Han about their biggest Lemon yet.

Welcome to the first proper interview with the famous Papa Mac, in this episode we talk about the lemon that was being diagnosed at 30 with melanoma, and how sometimes the love out of a lemon is that lemon in of itself. In Dad's case, it was that early battle with cancer that helped put in place the measures for the next fight with melanoma which came merely 25 years later.

A 3rd Cancer, A goal of 10k, 6 months of fundraising, Two communities 4 hours apart, A stubborn 16-year-old, 4 newspaper articles, A team of 35 girls, 1 charity, 18 months of the unknown, 700 people watching, A 12k result, 9 years on and now 1 podcast episode talking alllll about the love out of the lemon, and the lemons out of the love.

On March 14th 2015 in front of a crowd of 700+, I shaved my hair for The Cancer Society, in which we had been fundraising toward our goal of 10k for the past 6 months. During which Dad was fighting his third cancer.

This episode isn't just for those who were around at the time or are fascinated by where the first Love out of Lemon began for me. But also for anyone wanting to give fundraising a go. In honour of it, I sat down with Dad, to discuss how we raised 2k over our goal, why we were fundraising to begin with, what we learnt from it and what we would do differently now, and ofc the love out of the lemons, and the lemons out of the love.

What does a Vietnam veteran turn international psychiatrist, pet pythons, a German psychiatric ward, a yogi community, PTSD family therapy, Invercargill's mental health system and stigmas, Adam and Eve, and a life-altering leg-threatening car crash all have in common?

Mort!! Having lived a life with more lemons than even the writers of Yellowstone could dream up, he is truly a larger-than-life character with whom I have been blessed to share a roof every year over Christmas. Twisting his arm and thrusting a mic AND camera (!!) in front of him for over an hour to walk through his life's journey is still unfathomable to me, even after a month of editing and absorbing all the wisdom he has in his words "stumbled upon".

For this to be my first interview not only I conducted but shared, is a full circle moment. From sitting across the table and hearing all about Morts journeys whilst he pretended to "steal my nose" to get an on-the-ground perspective about the Vietnam war for my history essay, to now being able to have the opportunity to gift one of the most private and inspiring person's journey into the world.
