Losing your patience with your kids is one of the most common struggles for Christian working moms, and the guilt that follows can feel heavy. In this episode, we talk about why it happens, what God’s Word says, and how to move forward with grace instead of shame.
Most of the time, losing your patience isn’t really about the thing in front of you. It’s the moment your capacity ran out. After a full day of decisions, managing people, and holding it together, the people we love most often get whatever is left. Understanding what’s underneath changes how we respond.
In this episode, you’ll hear:
- Why losing your patience is rarely just about the moment in front of you
- What it means that your capacity ran out, and why working moms feel it so strongly
- What the Bible says about gentleness, anger, and parenting
- Why God is slow to anger with you, and why He remembers that we are dust
- The difference between conviction and condemnation, and how to tell whose voice you’re hearing
- A simple three-step way to repair with your child: name it, take responsibility, reconnect
- Why the word “but” cancels an apology
- A one-sentence prayer for the moment before you react
- When to talk with a pastor, counselor, or trusted friend
Scripture referenced (NIV):
- Proverbs 15:1: “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
- James 1:19-20: “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.”
- Ephesians 6:4: Parents are told not to provoke their children to anger, but to bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
- Psalm 103:8, 13-14: “The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.” God has compassion on His children and remembers that we are dust.
- 1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
- Romans 8:28: God works for the good of those who love Him.
Key takeaways:
- Look underneath. Losing your patience usually reveals how much you were already carrying. Ask, “What was going on in me before that moment?”
- Conviction moves you toward repair. Condemnation moves you toward hiding. God corrects you to restore you, never to shame you.
- Repair beats perfection. Name it, own it, and reconnect. Your child learns more from a mom who repairs than from a mom who pretends she never needs to.
- Pray in the moment. When you feel the heat rising, take a breath and pray, “Lord, help me.”
Your reminder for this week: The next time you lose your patience, don’t condemn yourself. Go back, name it, own it, and reconnect.
