Episode Description

I'm too young to rush, but too old to waste time.

That's one of my favorite quotes, and it's something I've been coming back to more often as I think about perspective, patience, and how quickly life seems to move.

In this episode, I'm exploring what it means to respect the time we have without feeling like we need to rush through every experience to make the most of it.

It's an interesting balance because we don't actually know how much time we have. None of us do. And while that uncertainty can remind us to appreciate the present, I don't think it means we should spend our lives constantly feeling like we're running out of time.

I first connected with this quote a handful of years ago, around the time I was approaching forty. And I've noticed how our perspective on age tends to change as we move through different stages of life.

When you're approaching thirty, it can feel like you're getting old. Then you reach forty, look back at thirty, and realize just how young you actually were.

And I imagine that perspective will continue changing as the years go by.

I'm also reflecting on how easy it is to convince ourselves that we should be further along in life.

Maybe you thought you'd have accomplished certain things by a particular age. Maybe your career, relationships, or personal goals haven't unfolded on the timeline you originally imagined.

But who's deciding what that timeline should look like?

Everybody is living their own life, and not everything needs to happen according to some predetermined schedule.

Sometimes things take longer than expected. Sometimes opportunities show up when we're not looking for them. And sometimes the experiences that end up meaning the most to us are the ones we couldn't have planned.

There's also something fascinating about how we experience time as we get older.

A song from thirty years ago can still feel like something we were listening to just a few years ago. Memories from decades earlier can feel surprisingly close, even though so much life has happened between then and now.

And that brings me back to the importance of perspective.

Respecting your time doesn't mean rushing through your life.

You can be intentional about where you're going without constantly feeling pressured to get there faster.

You can appreciate what you've experienced while recognizing that there are still people you haven't met, opportunities you haven't discovered, and moments you haven't lived.

And you can acknowledge that time is valuable without turning every day into another race against the clock.

I want you to think about how you're approaching your own life right now.

Are you giving yourself permission to experience where you are, or are you spending so much time thinking about where you should be that you're missing what's happening around you?

Because while we can't control how much time we have, we can continue developing a healthier relationship with how we experience it.

We're too young to rush, too old to waste time, and there's still so much life left to experience.
