Imagine a world where public life no longer offers safety, and even the most secure person can lose everything overnight. What kind of philosophy could promise peace in the middle of chaos? This is the world that gave birth to Epicureanism. Athens, after the death of Alexander the Great, was a city unmoored. The old civic world—the polis—was shaken by new powers, shifting alliances, and the feeling that fate could turn on you without warning. In this anxious climate, philosophy was not just about clever arguments. It was a search for shelter, a way to live well when the city itself could not be trusted. For Epicurus, born on the island of Samos, the answer would not be found in public honors or political power. Instead, he gathered his followers in a garden at the edge of Athens—a place that would become famous, not for its luxury, but for its openness. Women, slaves, and outsiders were welcome. That was radical, and it was no accident. If the city’s privileges could vanish, then the good life had to be something you could carry with you, no matter your status.Aurelius and Malik take on this case in full — 5 chapters, 33 minutes, one complete story.Learn more at: https://thephilosophyarchive.com/philosophy/epicureanism

The Philosophy Archive Dialogues is part of The Archive Network by Jonkai Ventures. In every episode, curators Aurelius and Malik take one thinker or idea and work through it together — one building the argument, the other pressing on where it strains.

The Archive Network is an independent, solo-run project. Everything is free, with no ads and no paywalls. Support doesn't unlock anything; it simply keeps the work going:
