Throughout history, women have often been relegated to the sidelines, subjugated by patriarchy, or prevented from exercising their God-given gifts at all. But women foster human flourishing in an array of spaces—as authors, pastors, and scholars. As artists, gardeners, and rock climbers. As friends, parents, and conversation partners. And much, much more. This half of the church has a unique voice that the whole church needs to hear. In Hear Women, Dorina Lazo Gilmore-Young, Tara Beth Leach, and Nijay Gupta engage in conversations that highlight the many ways that women are having profound impact in the church, their communities, and the world. Join us as we listen to women for the good of the church.

What the Church Needs to Know About Toxic Leadership | Yulee Lee
    Oct 19 2026
How can we recognize harmful leadership when it is hidden behind charisma, competence, or apparent kindness? In this episode of Hear Women, Tara Beth Leach welcomes Yulee Lee, leadership expert and author of Unmasking Toxic Leadership, for an honest conversation about toxic leadership, healing, discernment, and the kind of leadership that helps people flourish. Drawing from her own experiences with both healthy and harmful leaders, Lee reflects on how our wounds can shape the way we lead and why true leadership renewal requires more than simply trying to avoid becoming like the people who hurt us.Lee calls churches to move beyond good intentions and prepare for difficult moments by providing support, protection from retaliation, fair processes, and clear ways to report abuse outside the authority of the person being reported. Drawing from the story of the Good Samaritan, she asks what it would look like for the church to offer practical, costly care to people who have been wounded by toxic leadership.Rather than simply recycling harmful patterns, this conversation encourages leaders to use their God-given imagination to consider a kind of leadership that heals rather than harms. This episode highlights the following themes:How to recognize toxic leadership when the signs are subtleWhy discernment requires awareness, wisdom, and the courage to actHow churches can better care for people who have been harmed by toxic leadersLinks from this episode:Learn more about Yulee LeeRead Unmasking Toxic Leadership by Yulee LeeRead Prey Tell by Tiffany BluhmRead the transcript hereLearn more about Hear WomenLearn more about your hosts, Dorina Lazo Gilmore-Young, Nijay Gupta, and Tara Beth LeachRead Redeemer by Dorina Lazo Gilmore-YoungRead Tell Her Story by Nijay GuptaRead Emboldened by Tara Beth LeachSPECIAL OFFER | Visit ivpress.com and use the code IVPHEAR40 for 40% off and free shipping on any IVP resource mentioned in this episode.SPONSOR | Hear Women is sponsored by Northern Seminary, where thousands of women have been equipped to serve as pastors, practitioners, church planters, and ministry leaders across the globe. What the Church Needs to Know About the History of White Evangelical Women | Kristin Du Mez
    Sep 21 2026
How have you been shaped by the influence of White evangelical women through history, maybe without even realizing it? And what has it cost these women to live such influential lives? In this episode of Hear Women, Nijay Gupta welcomes Kristin Du Mez, Professor of History at Calvin University. As the bestselling author of Jesus and John Wayne and her newest release, Live Laugh Love: The Secret History of White Christian Women and the World They Made, Du Mez brings her expertise in history, gender, and evangelical culture to a conversation about the complex and often hidden world of Christian women in America.Together, they follow Du Mez’s Midwest upbringing, her transformative time studying in Germany, and then to her discovery of overlooked women such as Katharine Bushnell and evangelical icons such as Elisabeth Elliot and Amy Grant. She uncovers how women shaped and survived American evangelicalism—through music, fiction, celebrity, and community—and how the pressures and expectations they experienced bolstered their ministries or capsized them. Gupta and Du Mez reflect on power, nostalgia, control, suffering, and hope, while considering the lives of influential evangelical women of the past and present. You'll discover ways that White Christian women had profound influence on American evangelicalism, both positively and negatively, and emerge with a three-dimensional understanding of women's impact on American Christianity. This episode highlights the following themes:How White Christian women’s experiences are shaped by both subtle and public forcesWhy nostalgia can hide pain, and why history matters for making sense of evangelical cultureWhat happened to women who break silence and refuse conformity, such as Jen Hatmaker and Rachel Held EvansLinks from this episode:Learn more about Kristin Du Mez and read Live Laugh LoveCheck out Katharine Bushnell’s book God’s Word to WomenRead the transcript hereLearn more about Hear WomenLearn more about your hosts, Dorina Lazo Gilmore-Young, Nijay Gupta, and Tara Beth LeachRead Redeemer by Dorina Lazo Gilmore-YoungRead Tell Her Story by Nijay GuptaRead Emboldened by Tara Beth LeachSPECIAL OFFER | Visit ivpress.com and use the code IVPHEAR40 for 40% off and free US shipping on any IVP resource mentioned in this episode.SPONSOR | Hear Women is sponsored by Northern Seminary, where thousands of women have been equipped to serve as pastors, practitioners, church planters, and ministry leaders across the globe.
