In the 1990s, it took Gilles Frydman two hours online to find the information that saved his wife from unnecessary medical interventions. That moment turned him into a patient advocate and led him to found ACOR, one of the first cancer patient communities in the world. And since then he has been a key voice in the patient activism community.
We talked about how ACOR grew into a meaningful community for patients, decades before Facebook groups existed, why doctors used to fear informed patients (and why the good ones never did), the real story behind the term "participatory medicine," and how today's patients using AI echoes the internet revolution Gilles lived through thirty years ago. Patients, he says, aren't passive recipients of expertise, they're micro experts in their own health.
