The Gen X Experience is the podcast that rewinds the greatest years of our lives—the 1970s and 80s. Hosted by Eric Thompson, each episode dives into the cultural moments, trends, music, sports, and politics that defined Generation X, the last truly analog kids who grew up in a digital world.

From latchkey living and Saturday morning cartoons to Reagan, Rubik’s Cubes, and the rise of MTV, this show blends memory and meaning. Whether you were glued to your boombox making mixtapes, waiting in line at the arcade with a pocket full of quarters, or riding your bike until the streetlights came on—you’ll find your childhood here.

Each week, we explore a different piece of our shared history—sometimes lighthearted nostalgia, sometimes the heavy moments that shaped us all, but always through the lens of what it meant to be Gen X.

If you grew up in the era of cassette tapes, Atari, and big hair, this is your show. Tune in, rewind the memories, and celebrate the generation that raised itself, shaped culture, and learned to thrive on independence.

    30 Aug 2025
On August 1st, 1981, the world of music—and the world of Gen X—changed forever with the launch of MTV. Those first words, “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll,” ushered in a brand-new way of experiencing music. For Gen X latchkey kids, MTV wasn’t just a channel—it was a lifestyle. We raced home from school, flipped it on, and immersed ourselves in a universe where image, sound, and attitude fused into one.

This episode of Gen X Experience, we revisit the launch of MTV, explore the cultural impact it had on our generation, and remember the controversies, the iconic videos, and the unforgettable slogans like “I want my MTV!” If you grew up glued to the screen, waiting for your favorite band’s video to play, this rewind is for you.

    Latchkey Life: Freedom or Neglect?
    29 Aug 2025
For many Gen Xers, childhood meant coming home to an empty house. Parents were at work, and after school was a time of independence, responsibility—and sometimes loneliness. The “latchkey kid” became a symbol of a generation caught between shifting family dynamics and cultural change.

In this episode, we rewind to what it meant to be a latchkey kid in the 70s and 80s. From after-school snacks and unsupervised TV marathons, to the lessons in resilience and self-reliance, latchkey life shaped Gen X in ways few other experiences could.

Was it freedom? Was it neglect? Maybe it was a little of both. Join us as we explore how latchkey life prepared Gen X for the future, influenced family culture, and left an unforgettable mark on the way we grew up. This is a story only our generation can tell—because we lived it.
