Episode Title: S1E12: "Success Story" – Old Pals, Broken Dreams, and Uncle Leo!
Episode Description:
Pull up a chair in the Bunker living room—this week on Gee, Our Old LaSalle Ran Great, proudly part of the Aunt Ro Was Right Podcast Network, Paul and Rick dust off the DVD player to track down Season 1, Episode 12, "Success Story." Because this classic half-hour has become notoriously elusive on major streaming platforms, we took the physical media route to revisit one of the series' most bittersweet early installments.
Archie’s wealthy former army buddy, Eddie Frazier, sweeps into 704 Hauser Street flashing cash, expensive suits, and grand tales of triumph. But beneath the swagger lies a harsh reality. We explore the poignant, melancholic core of this episode, while also questioning a recurring trope across Norman Lear's masterpiece: why is it that every time one of Archie Bunker’s old friends seems to make it big, the facade inevitably crumbles?
Along the way, we celebrate a stellar ensemble of character actors:

• William Windom (Eddie Frazier): We trace his legendary screen presence, from prosecuting Tom Robinson in To Kill a Mockingbird to enduring John Candy and Steve Martin in Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Plus, Paul shares what it was like riding the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway—a pilgrimage inspired directly by Windom's memorable turn alongside Peter Falk in Columbo ("Short Fuse").
• Len Lesser: Decades before immortalizing "Hello, Jerry!" as Uncle Leo on Seinfeld, Lesser brings his sharp comedic instincts to the episode.
• George Savalas: Telly’s brother and fellow Kojak favorite makes a memorable appearance.
• Herbie Faye: A standout performance as the delivery man, prompting a look back at Faye's comedy legacy—including his scene-stealing work in Don Knotts' comedy classic The Ghost and Mr. Chicken.

Grab a cold one, settle into your favorite wing chair, and join us for a deep dive into an overlooked, bittersweet gem of television history!

When Gloria reads up on women’s liberation and decides it's time to challenge traditional gender roles, an innocent Sunday dinner erupts into a full-scale battle of the sexes. From Mike getting uncomfortably caught between his progressive ideals and male pride, to Archie’s stubborn defense of the status quo, we look at how this groundbreaking sitcom tackled feminism in 1971—and why so much of the sharp writing still hits home today.
Plus, we examine Sally Struthers' breakout performance, Edith’s peacemaking dinner diplomacy, and how Norman Lear managed to make generational warfare so hilariously human.
