Freezer Meal Shortcuts is about making your freezer work for you—not filling it with complicated make-ahead dinners. I’m Charles, and I’ll share the practical system I’m learning and testing at home: cook food you already enjoy, freeze it in useful single-serving portions, and combine those portions later to make quick meals with less waste and less work. From proteins and sides to soups, sauces, gravy, and leftovers, we’ll talk about what works, what doesn’t, and the lessons I learn along the way. Cook Once. Portion Smart. Eat Many Ways.Charles Kovacs Kochen Kunst Lebensmittel & Wein

  • EP06. What Turns Plain Freezer Food Into a Menu?
    12 Oct 2026

Plain chicken and ground beef are useful. Add a few sauces and gravies, and suddenly you have options.

In Episode 6, I talk about one of the easiest ways to make frozen meal components feel completely different from one meal to the next.

Chicken with gravy and mashed potatoes becomes comfort food. Add Alfredo and pasta and you’ve gone in another direction. BBQ sauce can turn it into a sandwich or bowl, while teriyaki and rice create something different again.

The other key is portion size. You often don’t need a full cup of sauce or gravy for one serving, so smaller portions can give you much more flexibility.

A few well-chosen sauces can turn the same basic proteins into several different meals without cooking everything from scratch.

  • EP05. How Many Meals Can One Batch of Ground Beef Become?
    28 Sep 2026

One batch of cooked ground beef doesn’t have to become one meal.

In Episode 5, I show how keeping a basic protein flexible can give you several different choices later.

Cook a larger batch of ground beef, drain it, portion it, and freeze it plain. Then decide what it becomes when you’re ready to eat—spaghetti one night, tacos or nachos another, or something completely different.

The same idea works with other proteins too. Cook once, keep some of it flexible, and let the final meal depend on what sounds good that day.

That’s one of the biggest advantages of building a freezer with components instead of locking every portion into a finished recipe.

  • EP04. What If Freezer Prep Didn’t Need a Prep Day?
    14 Sep 2026

You don’t need to spend an entire day cooking thirty freezer meals to start building a useful freezer.

In Episode 4, I talk about a much simpler approach: attach freezer prep to cooking you’re already doing.

Making chicken for dinner? Cook a little extra and freeze some in useful portions. Making ground beef, pulled pork, soup, a casserole, or a sauce? The same idea applies.

Over time, those extra portions start adding up—and suddenly you have proteins, sides, sauces, and meals waiting for the days when you don’t have the time or energy to start dinner from scratch.

Freezer prep doesn’t have to become another project on your to-do list. Start small, use the food you already cook, and build from there.
