Most people are building a life. Few are building one that lasts.

A Friend's Worst Day: The Strength to Lead Through Tragedy

What happens when life delivers a tragedy you never saw coming? And when the people you love need you most, will the foundation you've built be strong enough to help you stand?

In this deeply personal episode of Fire Forged Leader, host Steve Baumgartner shares the heartbreaking story of his close friend Roy, whose four-year-old grandson, Alex, tragically passed away following a drowning accident.

On July 4th, Steve was enjoying a beautiful day with his family when he received a phone call that changed everything. His friend Roy was facing every family's worst nightmare.

Over the following weeks, Steve witnessed not only unimaginable grief but also an extraordinary example of courage, faith, and leadership.

What stood out wasn't that Roy had all the answers. It was that he had built the foundation to remain present for his family even when his own world was falling apart.

Through Roy's story, Steve explores three essential foundations that prepare men to lead through life's most difficult moments:

    1. Faith — Build Your Foundation Before the Storm

Roy's faith wasn't something he discovered during tragedy. It was something he had strengthened over years through mentorship, prayer, scripture, and personal commitment.

    2. Brotherhood — Surround Yourself With Men Who Will Stand Beside You

True brotherhood goes beyond casual friendships. It means having men who challenge you, hold you accountable, pray with you, and show up when life becomes unbearable.

    3. Action — Practice Being the Man Your Family Needs

Strength and leadership aren't built overnight. They're developed through consistent choices, meaningful relationships, and daily discipline long before they're tested.

In this episode, Steve challenges men to ask themselves:

    • Who are the strong men in your life?
    • Who holds you accountable to your mission?
    • Who will stand beside you when everything falls apart?
    • Are you building the foundation your family will need before the difficult days arrive?

Steve also honors Alex, whose legacy continues through organ donation that helped save four other lives, and recognizes the courage of Roy and his entire family.

This episode isn't about having all the answers to life's hardest questions. It's about faith, brotherhood, and becoming the kind of man others can depend on—even when you're struggling yourself.

Don't wait for tragedy to discover what matters most. Build your foundation today. Hold your people close. And surround yourself with men who will stand beside you when life gets hard.

  • Stop Living as a Discounted Version of Yourself | Reclaim the Value You’ve Forgotten
    5 Oct 2026

Are you working harder, delivering results, and still feeling undervalued, overlooked, or stuck in your career?

In this episode of Fire Forged Leader, host Steve Baumgartner explores what happens when capable professionals allow someone else’s assessment to determine their value—and why accepting those labels can eventually become more limiting than the assessment itself.

Steve uses a simple but powerful metaphor: the dented can sitting on the discount shelf.

The packaging may be damaged. The label may look different. The price may have been marked down. But the product inside hasn’t necessarily changed.

The same thing can happen in your career and your life.

A difficult performance review, a missed promotion, a past mistake, a job loss, or someone else’s opinion can begin to shape how you see yourself. Eventually, you can start carrying that assessment as an identity.

But someone else’s evaluation of you does not have to become your definition of yourself.

Drawing from more than 32 years of executive leadership and manufacturing experience, Steve challenges you to examine the labels you have accepted and ask whether they still deserve the authority you have given them.

Inspired in part by lessons from comeback coach Tim Storey, Steve challenges you to stop living as a discounted version of yourself and start taking responsibility for where you go next.

Instead of waiting for your company, manager, title, circumstances, or next performance review to determine your direction, Steve introduces a practical four-step framework:

    POSITION. AIM. TRAIN. HOLD.

POSITION — Get honest about where you are today.

AIM — Decide where you are going instead of allowing circumstances to choose for you.

TRAIN — Build the skills, habits, discipline, and strength required to become that man.

HOLD — Stay committed when pressure, setbacks, and old narratives try to pull you backward.

Your past may have left a dent. Someone else may have put a different label on you. But neither has to determine what you do next.

If you have been feeling overlooked, undervalued, stuck, or defined by something that happened in your past, this episode is a challenge to stop living from the discount shelf and start moving forward with intention.
