  • From Burnout to Business: Helping Physicians Build Their Next Chapter

What happens when the career you spent decades building no longer feels like the career you want for the rest of your life?

In this episode of Emergency Minute, Dr. John Parente sits down with emergency physician and entrepreneur Dr. Patrick O’Malley to talk candidly about burnout, career disillusionment, financial freedom, entrepreneurship, and what it takes to build a meaningful “second half” in medicine.

Patrick shares why he ultimately left clinical emergency medicine in 2025, how physician coaching helped him recognize that it was time for a change, and the two questions that fundamentally changed the way he viewed his career: Does emergency medicine still have something to offer you—and do you still have something to offer emergency medicine?

They discuss why physicians should begin thinking about financial flexibility and alternative career paths long before burnout reaches a breaking point, and how Patrick gradually transitioned from clinical medicine by building his Laceration Course and other entrepreneurial projects rather than making an abrupt exit.

Patrick also introduces Shift Change, his community designed to help physicians, PAs, NPs, and other clinicians connect with entrepreneurs, coaches, investors, technology experts, and other professionals who can help turn an idea into something real. His goal isn’t to convince clinicians to leave medicine—it’s to give them more options and help them build careers that better fit the lives they want.

Topics include physician burnout, career longevity, coaching, work-life balance, financial planning, side hustles, entrepreneurship, social media, networking, non-clinical careers, and building your next chapter in healthcare.

  • Doctor's Were Told to Stay Off Social Media. That Was a Mistake.
    Sep 3 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

For years, physicians were warned to stay off social media. But while doctors stayed quiet, wellness influencers, questionable health advice, and medical misinformation exploded online. Was staying silent actually a mistake?

In this episode of Emergency Minute, Dr. John Parente sits down with emergency physician, national media contributor, health-tech executive, and content creator Dr. Owais Durrani to talk about why physicians need a stronger voice in today’s digital world.

Dr. Durrani shares how becoming one of the first confirmed COVID-19 cases in San Antonio unexpectedly launched him into national media, eventually leading to regular television appearances and a growing social media presence. John and Owais discuss the changing role of physicians online, combating medical misinformation, why follower count matters less than it used to, and how doctors can use social media to educate far more people than they ever could during a single clinical shift.

They also dive into AI in medicine—including what’s real, what’s overhyped, and why AI is much more likely to eliminate some of medicine’s most frustrating tasks than replace physicians anytime soon.

And medicine is only part of Owais’s story. He talks about creating a STEM television show for kids, interviewing NASA astronauts, exploring science and technology careers, and even flying with the Blue Angels—an experience that ended with him both passing out and throwing up…and still calling it one of the greatest experiences of his life.

It’s a wide-ranging conversation about medicine, media, technology, misinformation, curiosity, and what it means to be a physician in the digital age.

HOW TO FIND DR. OWAIS DURRANI:

You can find me on Instagram @acedurrani and LinkedIn (Owais Durrani), where I share accessible, fact-based medical and science content. And if anyone listening is working on contextual AI solutions in healthcare, whether that's ambient scribing, querying patient charts, or other tools, feel free to reach out.

  • The Doctor is Not OK: A Conversation about Physician Burnout
    Jul 20 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

Burnout has become almost expected in medicine—but that does not mean healthcare professionals should simply accept it.

In this episode of Emergency Minute, Dr. John Parente sits down with executive leadership and burnout recovery coach Elsa Arend to discuss why burnout is so common among physicians, healthcare workers, and other high-performing professionals.

Drawing from John’s more than two decades in emergency medicine and Elsa’s experience recovering from burnout during her corporate career, they explore the warning signs that are often ignored, including emotional exhaustion, detachment, cynicism, declining empathy, and the feeling that there is simply no way out.

They also discuss why burnout is not merely an individual failure. Heavy workloads, increasing patient volumes, inadequate staffing, administrative demands, and a culture that discourages physicians from asking for help all contribute to the problem.

    In this episode:

    • How to recognize burnout before reaching a breaking point
    • Why physicians often feel trapped in their careers
    • The difference between everyday stress and true burnout
    • How healthcare systems contribute to emotional exhaustion
    • The importance of boundaries, self-awareness, and recovery
    • When coaching, therapy, or a career change may be necessary
    • How to rediscover purpose without abandoning everything you have built

Elsa Arend is an ICF-credentialed executive leadership and burnout recovery coach who helps professionals move from stress and overwhelm toward greater clarity, confidence, and energy.

Burnout can feel isolating, but it is not a personal weakness—and recovery is possible.
