  • ST THOMAS AQUINAS by Chesterton

    ST THOMAS AQUINAS by Chesterton
    Sep 29 2024
This text is an excerpt from G.K. Chesterton's book St. Thomas Aquinas, which is a biographical and philosophical examination of the titular figure. The text contrasts St. Thomas with St. Francis, arguing that St. Thomas was a "man of reason" while St. Francis was a "man of feeling". It then goes on to explain how St. Thomas was a defender of Aristotle, who was often seen as a threat to the Church. Chesterton contends that St. Thomas's defense of Aristotle, coupled with his commitment to reason, ultimately contributed to the development of science. The text concludes by discussing the key elements of Thomism, including its emphasis on common sense, reality, and the relationship between mind and object.

  • ST FRANCIS OF ASSISI by Chesterton

ST FRANCIS OF ASSISI by Chesterton
    Sep 29 2024
This text is an excerpt from G.K. Chesterton's book on Saint Francis of Assisi, published in 2010. Chesterton argues that understanding Saint Francis requires considering the world he lived in, particularly the end of the Dark Ages and the transition to the Middle Ages. He discusses Saint Francis's life from his childhood and his early dreams about becoming a soldier, to his conversion to a life of poverty and his founding of the Franciscan order. The text also explores Saint Francis's relationship with the Church, his attempts at conversion and martyrdom, and the controversy surrounding his vow of poverty. Chesterton emphasises the unique qualities of Saint Francis's personality, particularly his humility, his love for all people, and his deep connection to nature. He suggests that understanding Saint Francis's life requires acknowledging his mystical experiences and appreciating the paradoxical nature of his actions.
