With researcher and thinker Nizar Salloum, we attempt to unpack the ambiguous relationship between religion and power, and the difference between faith as a spiritual value and the use of the sacred as a tool of governance and domination. We discuss how regimes resort to employing religious symbols to consolidate their legitimacy and silence opposition, and whether this phenomenon is recent or deeply rooted in the region’s political history.

We also broaden the discussion to include the West, pausing at examples such as religious discourse in American politics. The episode further explores the experiences of Arab movements to understand how this concept manifests in practice, where it succeeds and where it fails.

In the final segment, we raise the most pressing question: where is the new generation heading? Are we witnessing a decline in political religion, or its reinvention in new forms? And is it possible to emerge from this tunnel amid state collapse and rising extremism?
