Ronnie Spellman talks with Tony Lorenz, founder of Headsail and a lifelong Chicagoan. Tony has built, scaled and sold companies. They cover how founders adjust when private equity comes in, why systems matter more than hustle at scale, and why AI only pays off once your data and workflows are in order. Tony also shares the costly lesson of a business that came too early.

Key takeaways

• Growth takes a different skill set. What gets a founder to the first milestone often isn't what private equity expects next, but those skills can be learned.
• Build a system, not just a business. Founders need to get themselves out of the business and into the system to scale past $100M.
• Fix data and workflows before adding AI. Connect your data in one place and rethink your workflows first. Otherwise AI is a band-aid on a leaky ship.
• Ask "what's the one thing?" Plans with dozens of priorities water down results. Focus on one or two.
• Culture isn't soft. Tony sees a leader's role as stewarding someone's "tour of duty," because losing good people is the most expensive mistake.
• Know when to pull the plug. Tony spent millions on an early content platform and moved on when the market wasn't ready.

Ronnie Spellman interviews Ken Himmler, founder and CEO of OneWealth Map, about how he built a financial planning firm designed to bring CPA, legal, insurance, and investment work under one roof. Ken also explains how decades in finance shaped his views on Roth conversions, trusts, life insurance, reverse mortgages, corporate structure, and the role AI can play in replicating real planning judgment. This conversation is especially useful for entrepreneurs and business owners because Ken ties financial planning to systems, operations, and long-term decision-making. He also shares hard-earned lessons from building a firm, selling it, and learning that experience, not ego, is what separates durable leaders from short-term winners.

Key topics

• Ken Himmler shares how a financial aptitude test and a background in hockey unexpectedly launched his career in finance after he knew almost nothing about money.
• He explains that OneWealth Map was built to solve a coordination problem: CPA, lawyer, investment advisor, and insurance professional all working from one integrated plan.
• Ken describes why private equity was interested in his firm in 2014 - not just for clients, but for process, systems, redundancies, and operational efficiency.
• He warns that market cycles repeat, citing the 1986 crash, the dot-com era, and 2008 as examples of reversion to the mean rather than permanent new eras.
• Ken argues that today’s AI enthusiasm resembles the late 1990s internet bubble, with too much money chasing infrastructure and too little attention to sustainability.
• He breaks down how Roth conversions work, why many large institutions discourage them, and why he built the Rothanator to analyze them with AI.
• Ken says trusts are valuable for far more than ultra-wealthy families, especially for probate avoidance, incapacity planning, and protecting assets when life gets disrupted.
• He takes a skeptical view of life insurance as a retirement strategy, saying the product should be used for death benefit protection, not sold as a magic tax shelter.
• Ken strongly supports reverse mortgages when used correctly under FHA rules, and he contrasts them with newer equity share loans for homeowners who want liquidity without monthly payments.
• He emphasizes that the biggest risks for entrepreneurs are overconfidence, lack of humility, and trying to learn everything by personal failure instead of learning from others.
