The resurrection is not a side topic for Christians, it is the backbone of hope, justice, and real life. We go after the questions people actually ask: Do we go straight to be with Jesus when we die? Why would we need a resurrected body if we are already with him? Will we recognize each other, and what happens to our scars, our aging, and our broken bodies?
Working through John 5, we lay out two connected realities Jesus teaches. First, resurrection life starts now: “He who hears My word and believes… has everlasting life… and has passed from death to life.” Eternal life is not a paycheck for religious effort, it is a present gift received by faith. Second, a future bodily resurrection is coming for everyone, and Jesus describes two outcomes: resurrection of life and resurrection of condemnation. That leads to the real tension many feel about judgment, heaven, and hell, and why Jesus insists he is both the righteous judge and the merciful mediator.
We also get painfully practical about performance and shame. The law can name sin, but it cannot change the heart. Only Jesus can. We unpack the “great exchange” of the gospel: our sin judged in Christ, his life given to us, and the freedom of living from love instead of trying to prove we are enough. If the same voice that will one day call graves open is calling us today, what would it look like to listen?
