We’ve all heard the saying, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” But what if comparison isn’t always something we need to avoid? What if, when approached with curiosity rather than criticism, it could actually help us better understand ourselves?
In this episode of Grow Through It, I’m sharing a recent personal experience that led me to reflect on my own professional journey after learning about the accomplishments of another woman whose path shared some similarities with mine.
Rather than allowing comparison to make me feel inadequate—or dismissing her accomplishments simply because our paths were different—I found myself asking deeper questions about my values, ambitions, and the choices I’ve made.
And it got me thinking: How much of what we consider success is genuinely rooted in our personal values, and how much has been shaped by the systems and expectations around us?
Together, we’ll explore:
- Why we naturally compare ourselves to others and what social comparison theory teaches us.
- How society shapes our definitions of success through status, wealth, credentials, and recognition.
- The difference between admiration, envy, and feelings of inadequacy.
- How comparison can reveal desires we’ve overlooked or ambitions we’ve been hesitant to pursue.
- Why appreciating someone else’s accomplishments doesn’t mean questioning the value of our own journey.
- Five practical steps for turning comparison into reflection, recalibration, and intentional growth.
This conversation isn’t about convincing ourselves that we should always be content with where we are. It’s about developing the self-awareness to recognize when we’re genuinely aligned with our values—and when we might be playing small.
Because someone else’s success can be information without becoming an instruction.
Tune in for a conversation about comparison, personal growth, societal expectations, and redefining success on your own terms.
