• Update #110: Just an Update
    May 4 2025
Sorry, didn't script this one. Just recorded because it's been a while. I talk a little bit about my obsession in trying to free myself slowly from billionaire-owned platforms in any little way I can, mostly by self-hosting my own services. I give some updates about YTG: the newest intern has arrived from the Netherlands and she'll be co-directing Anxiety with me. I sat down with her and Lucille, the French intern who arrived at the beginning of April, to start the planning process for the show. So yeah, it's a short update.

  • Update #109: Paralysis
    Apr 13 2025
In this update, I talk about INTERFERENCE, which went up last week. I also start worrying about how I'm going to handle all my commitments for the summer, and finish the update with my thoughts on being overwhelmed and my executive dysfunction— but also, some light at the end of the tunnel.

  • Update #108: Slaz!
    Mar 28 2025
In this update, I talk about some inexpensive audio upgrades I made (repurposed some old speakers, got an inexpensive amp and subwoofer, ditched the terminally ill PC speakers, and got a used audio interface for the mic), as well as giving updates about next week's show, INTERFERENCE | ИНТЕРФЕРЕНЦИЯ! You should definitely check it out if you're able. We are live-streaming, as usual, so you can watch online if you're not in the Kawasaki area. We're performing at very weird times for us so that there's at least one show convenient to every time zone. I did this for you! Please grab a ticket at https://ytg.jp/interference. If funds are tight, please use the code BETHEAUDIENCE for a 100% discount. Selling tickets is great, and it's gratifying for people to buy tickets to see my work, but I don't want money to stand between you and the show! I want your eyes! (To watch the show, I mean, not for a collection or anything weird like that.) I have just a few updates about Anxiety, but things have really moved since I recorded, so I'll have some more news about that soon. Assuming my annual pollen allergies don't kill me first. Just a heads-up that I'll probably have to record next week's update from the theatre, so be prepared for a precipitous drop in sound quality. (Why is this updated titled "Slaz"? You'll have to at least click the link to get the answer that!)

  • Update #107: Archiving Nudity
    Mar 12 2025
Is this week’s update safe for work? Yes, sadly it is. I am referring only to my old acoustic music and poetry show that I ran from 2000 to 2003 in Toronto. It was called “Naked and Alone” and I spend a lot of time in this week’s update about archiving my old media. I used to back up all my files to writable CD-R discs, but I was reminded this week that those discs turned out to have a very limited lifespan and after 25 years, I should probably be moving them to some other media. In fact, there’s no media that’s great for long term storage. The best bet is to keep the data moving and in as many places as possible. So while I do other stuff on the PC this week, I am copying the old CDs disc by disc to my server, where they will exist on two spinning hard drives, and will also be backed up to my cloud backup provider in the US. At some point, I’ll make my own box in Canada to store all the family’s data… but what does this all have to do with art? Well, I finish this week’s updates off by pasting in a recording of the finale of Naked and Alone from April 18, 2001, so enjoy it in all its single-mic people-just-having-fun glory.

  • Update #106: I Guess the Oscars Happened
    Mar 4 2025
In this update, I realize that the Oscars happened and I didn't even notice. What I did notice was last week's INTERFERENCE rehearsals which went a bit sideways. I talk about the last time I really lost my cool on a fellow creative. I've done it amazingly few times based on some of the role models I had early in my career. I'm sometimes very glad my career never took off early on. Maybe it's just sour grapes, but I think success would have completely ruined me as a human. I think working on more marginal productions in marginal spaces with other people who are giving their time freely to the project has made me a better person. I don't actually talk about this in the update... maybe I should have. Maybe that's a good topic for a future update. You can sign up for March's Nerd Nite here: https://tokyo.nerdnite.com And you can donate and get your tickets for interference here: https://ytg.jp/interference

  • Update #103 - Walking on Mars
    Feb 7 2025
In this update, I let you know how my back pain is going (it still ouches) before I get into some theatre updates. I also talk about Baye McNeil's book launch. If you're listening to these updates, please drop me a line so I have some idea who I'm talking to!
