Miracles: The Problem of Food John 6:8-13

Dr Alfonse Javed & Christian Sylvester

John 6 contains some of the most familiar and profound teaching in John, including the feeding of the 5,000 and Jesus' declaration, “I am the bread of life.”

The miracles of Jesus were never merely displays of His power; they were signs pointing us to His person.

In John 6, we will discover three truths about the miracles of Jesus: Miracles Reveal a Great Problem (John 6:1–21), God's Purpose (John 6:22–40), and Gracious Provision (John 6:41–71).

    John 6:1-21 reveals three problems:

    1. The Problem of FAITH (vv. 1–7)

    2. The Problem of FOCUS (vv. 8–13)

    Miracles: The Problem, Part 1

John 6:1-7 | Dr Alfonse Javed & Pastor Caleb Hanna

John 6 contains some of the most familiar and profound teaching in John, including the feeding of the 5,000 and Jesus' declaration, “I am the bread of life.”

The miracles of Jesus were never merely displays of His power; they were signs pointing us to His person. The miracle is not the destination; it is the sign pointing us to the Savior.

In John 6, we will discover three truths about the miracles of Jesus:

    1. Miracles Reveal a Great Problem — John 6:1–21

    2. Miracles Reveal God's Purpose — John 6:22–40

    3. Miracles Reveal Gracious Provision — John 6:41–71

Today, we begin by examining the problem. Before Jesus reveals Himself as the Bread of Life, John shows us a humanity that is hungry, helpless, and unable to meet its deepest needs.

    1. The Problem of Faith (John 6:1-7)

Discussion and insights on last Sunday's message

John 5:39-47 | Dr Alfonse Javed & Pastor Caleb Hanna

Jesus does not ask us to believe without evidence. In John 5:18-29, Jesus claimed that He alone has the power to move us from death to life because He is equal with God, exalted by God, and is the eternal God.

John 5:30-47 presents the evidence for His divine claim. Deuteronomy 17:6 establishes the principle that a matter must be confirmed by the testimony of two or three witnesses: "On the evidence of 2 witnesses or of 3 witnesses the one who is to die shall be put to death; a person shall not be put to death on the evidence of one witness."

Jesus presents three witnesses to establish the truth of His claim.

    1. The Witness of John (vv. 30-35)

    2. The Works of Jesus (v. 36)

    3. The Word of Jehovah (vv. 37-47)
