  • Trump’s 15-Month Golf Course Shutdown: What Happens to Historic D.C. Greens?
    Oct 18 2026

President Donald Trump has announced plans to close East Potomac Golf Links, a historic public golf course in Washington, D.C., for approximately 15 months starting November 15, 2026. The proposed redevelopment aims to transform the century-old facility into a championship-level golf destination capable of hosting major tournaments, including the U.S. Open and the Ryder Cup.

The plan has sparked debate over the future of a public recreational space traditionally used by local residents. Preservation advocates have raised concerns about tree removal, environmental protections, and the potential impact of the redesign on public access.

The announcement comes amid an ongoing legal dispute. A federal judge has temporarily halted further tree removal through October 26 while the court examines concerns surrounding the project. Trump says the renovated course will remain open to the public, but questions about the redevelopment and its long-term impact remain.

  • Tens of thousands march in Lisbon over housing, cost of living crisis
    Oct 17 2026

Tens of thousands of people marched through central Lisbon on Saturday to protest against soaring living costs and a deepening housing crisis in Portugal, increasing pressure on the center-right government.

Portugal's biggest union, CGTP, which called the rally, said "many tens of thousands" packed one of the capital's main avenues. Police gave no crowd estimate.

Protesters say low wages are failing to keep pace with housing costs and the rising cost of living, leaving many people struggling to make ends meet in the European Union and NATO member state.

  • Clashes, fires and looting break out as protesters rally across France
    Oct 17 2026

About 400 people were arrested nationwide, interior minister Laurent Nunez said.

Mr Nunez said 110 marches drew about 550,000 people across the country.

Organisers, including the CGT labour union and students’ organisations, said about 800,000 demonstrators took to the streets.

Mr Nunez described troublemakers as “extremely violent, radical far-left groups” whom, he said, sought confrontations with police and targeted public buildings, including city halls and local government offices.

He said those groups have been joined by offenders willing to loot shops.

Most of those arrested are adults, he said.

Some incidents were still ongoing in central Paris on Saturday evening.

  • Rare pink diamond goes on display in France 100 years after amateur heist
    Oct 17 2026

A rare pink diamond is going on display in France for the first time since it was stolen almost 100 years ago to the day - the last time it was shown to the public.

The nine-carat, pear-shaped gemstone known as the "Grand Condé" was pilfered in an overnight raid on the Château de Chantilly in October 1926 and concealed in a hollowed-out apple.

The diamond - one of few royal jewels to survive the French Revolution - was recovered a few weeks later when a hungry maid at the hotel in which the thieves were staying took a bite of the apple.

It will once again be on display in the Condé Museum at the Château de Chantilly until 3 January.

The museum's director Mathieu Deldicque said that while the apple story may sounds far-fetched, it was widely covered by newspapers at the time.

Deldicque has faced questions about whether the exhibition may be tempting fate, especially given the string of heists on European cultural institutions in the past 12 months, including the daring daylight robbery of jewellery from the Louvre museum in Paris.

While he declined to reveal to CNN how much the diamond was insured for, he noted that extensive academic study into the properties of the diamond had taken place to make it uniquely identifiable.
