How can one European capital be responsible for most of the West's intellectual and cultural achievements in the twentieth century?

Viennese ideas saturate the modern world. From California architecture to Hollywood Westerns, modern advertising to shopping malls, orgasms to gender confirmation surgery, nuclear fission to fitted kitchens—every aspect of our history, science, and culture is in some way shaped by Vienna.

The city of Freud, Wittgenstein, Mahler, and Klimt was the melting pot at the heart of a vast metropolitan empire. But with the Second World War and the rise of fascism, the dazzling coteries of thinkers who squabbled, debated, and called Vienna home dispersed across the world, where their ideas continued to have profound impact.

Richard Cockett gives us the entirety of this extraordinary story. Tracing Vienna's rich intellectual history from psychoanalysis to Reaganomics, Cockett encompasses everything from the communist rebels of Red Vienna to the neoliberal economists of the Austrian School. This is the panoramic account of how one city made the modern world—and how we all remain inescapably Viennese.

It’s a great book, but I don’t understand why it is so difficult to find a speaker who has at least a minimum command of German or gives at least minimum effort to get the pronounciation of Austrian names right, which are used in every 2nd sentence. It is embarrassing, barely comprehensible and very distracting to listen to.

Great book, ridiculous pronunciation

The narrator doesn’t speak German and mutilates the pronunciation of all German words and names (of which there are many) in this book, rendering them unrecognizable to people like me who are already familiar with the subject. It is unfortunate. The book itself provides a comprehensive, if somewhat dry, summary of the topic - I enjoyed it, but preferred Carl Schorske’s monumental book, which covered similar material.

Decent book, flawed verbal performance

This is a very nice overview of pre-WW1 and interwar Viennese culture, thinking, and innovation, and their global impact. It complements the more personal/subjective "Die Welt von gestern" by Stefan Zweig.

The only annoying aspect is the reader: his pronunciation of German names is so bad that I repeatedly had to look up who he was talking about.

Good overview, but the reader...

A truly interesting and comprehensive description of how Vienna shaped European culture in the late 19th and early 20th century. Highly recommended for everyone interested in history.

However, while the narrator is generally engaging, I find it hard to understand why there wasn’t even the slightest attempt to correctly pronounce all the German names and words (of which there are many).

Great story, poor pronunciation

I know quite a bit about the intellectual and cultural history of Vienna in the period so I really didn't expect to learn much new from this book. I was wrong! It is fascinating and suprising even to those who are already familiar with the topic, and highly recommended. I ended up buying the book too for the many illustrations and also to re-read particularly interesting passages. The narrator of the audiobook however is grotesque, to put it charitably. He sounds like an automaton, weird and annoying. The AI voice of my car navigation system can do better, much better. And don't get me started on his attempts to pronounce the German names and titles! In the digital age, there is no excuse for a narrator, nor the producer of the audiobook, not to make the slightest attempt to get this right. But if you think his German is bad, listen to how he "pronounces" Le Corbusier... thoroughly cringey.

Where is AI when you need it?!
