A brilliant new theory of how and why some nations recover from trauma and others don't, by the author of the landmark best sellers Guns, Germs, and Steel and Collapse.

In his earlier best sellers Guns, Germs and Steel and Collapse, Jared Diamond transformed our understanding of what makes civilizations rise and fall. Now, in the final audiobook in this monumental trilogy, he reveals how successful nations recover from crisis through selective change - a coping mechanism more commonly associated with personal trauma.

In a dazzling comparative study, Diamond shows us how seven countries have survived defining upheavals in the recent past - from US Commodore Perry's arrival in Japan to the Soviet invasion of Finland to Pinochet's regime in Chile - through a process of painful self-appraisal and adaptation, and he identifies patterns in the way that these distinct nations recovered from calamity. Looking ahead to the future, he investigates whether the US and the world are squandering their natural advantages on a path toward political conflict and decline. Or can we still learn from the lessons of the past?

Adding a psychological dimension to the awe-inspiring grasp of history, geography, economics, and anthropology that marks all Diamond's work, Upheaval reveals how both nations and individuals can become more resilient. The result is an audiobook that is epic, urgent, and groundbreaking.

Very good analysis in view of Trumps disastrous changing of global into local order with no concept whatsoever.

Exzellent!

Even if you might not agree in every detail with this book, you will gain a lot from it. The basic message is: The US is in a crisis and should do honest self appraisal. To make his point and also to show ways to overcome this crisis, the author gives many examples of historical upheavals in different countries.

The statement of crisis is convincing to me, but I think, its focus on the USA is too narrow (therefore only 4 instead of 5 stars from me). I rather think the whole western culture undergoes a kind of crisis period. At least for Europe I have to say that we are also in urgent need of honest self appraisal,

However, the historical examples are really interessting to read and society can learn a lot from it for the future. In the case of Germany I can confirm that the author has broad and unbiased knowledge.

So, thanks for this book, which is, by the way, excellently read by Henry Strozier.

I am German and I have a close relationship to Japan. Both countries are discussed in this book. It has really changed my view on how the countries developed after sharing a comparable crisis the second world war.

Helps to understand history better

The day that Jared Diamond realizes the negative impacts of the corporatist empire he grew up in, is the day hell freezes.
His description of Chile's takeover by said corporations is painful to listen to.
Basically just a "he deserved it, it was too provocative for the (international) rich to let it slip".
Maybe read up on "Shock doctrine" or "Confessions of an economic Hitman" to listen to the counterarguments.

Blind on the corporatist eye
