One masquerade. One misplaced slipper. One very unexpected betrothal.

When Elizabeth Bennet dons the mask of Athena at a glittering Twelfth Night masquerade, she expects only an evening of diversion—not disaster. But after a misadventure involving a determined rake, a lost shoe, and a most inconvenient encounter in the garden, she finds herself at the centre of London’s latest scandal.

Fitzwilliam Darcy prides himself on propriety. But when he spots a lady in distress at a ball and gallantly steps in to help, he doesn’t rescue her from trouble—he walks straight into it with her. One country maiden, a moonlight encounter, and a slipper in the wrong hands is all it takes: the ton believes them engaged—or worse. Now entangled with the quick-witted, sharp-tongued Miss Elizabeth Bennet, his carefully ordered, predictable world begins to unravel.

Darcy is prepared to do what honour demands. Elizabeth, however, is prepared to do anything to escape the engagement—including leveraging her intellect, wit, and every ounce of stubborn determination she possesses. Unfortunately for her, Mr. Darcy is equally resolved not to let society destroy their reputations—or to let her go.

Sometimes it takes a masquerade to reveal the truth, a lost slipper to find your footing, and a forced engagement to discover a love worth fighting for.

The Slipper Scandal is the second standalone novel in the Darcy & Elizabeth Rom Com Collection.

When Elizabeth Bennet visits her first Twelve Night Ball in town disaster strikes - cornered by a rake she flees in the garden only to lose her slipper on the way. Fitzwilliam Darcy only wants to assist her by giving her her slipper back - and now the two are engaged to avoid an even bigger scandal. Elizabeth is determined to end this engagement before it really begins by imploring her cleverness and her determination. But Darcy is equally determined that they should proceed with the engagement to protect their reputations - and because Elizabeth slowly captures his heart.
Will he be successful in convincing Elizabeth that an unwanted engagement can sometimes be exactly what one wants? Will he be able to show her his growing affection and love? And why is Elizabeth so determined to fight the engagement?

The book was very well written by the author Melanie Rachel. I always enjoy her books very much, I even normally buy them without knowing the content because this author never disappoints me. This story is no exception and I loved it so very much.
By the way, I love the cute cover with the drawn image of Darcy and Elizabeth. All the covers of this series are a delight.

The story takes place in London therefore most of the time it’s only about Darcy, Elizabeth, Elizabeth's friends Arabella (with whom she stays), the Gardiners and Darcy’s relations. Unfortunately for Elizabeth her mother is to join her in the middle of the story. Elizabeth dreads this fact because her mother is sure to work against Elizabeth’s ambitions to end the engagement to Darcy. In addition Elizabeth is ashamed of her mother’s vulgar behaviour and does not want to confront Darcy with it (even when she tries to get rid of him).

I really love Darcy in this story. He really makes an effort to convince Elizabeth to keep their engagement. And he tries to win her by showing his true self and not a haughty mask. I like his efforts and I like the Darcy I get to see, the Darcy he would like to show Elizabeth. He even plays the violin for her in public because he is more able to show his feelings in music than in person. He really is swoonworthy.
It’s not only Darcy who makes an effort, his whole family is very supportive of the match - at times too supportive because they try everything in their power to show Darcy in a favorable light and therefore rob him of the time to actually speak with Elizabeth for himself. It is definitely funny to read about them and their efforts but poor Darcy suffers enormously.

Elizabeth is for a really long time opposed to the match with Darcy. It’s not because of a lack of feeling - she is more and more drawn to Darcy and begins to love him - but she has some very essential fears to overcome first. I like her talks with Darcy on the matter and who he finally convinces her. I can understand Elizabeth and why she is reluctant to allow herself to follow her heart. It was very well written and comprehensible. But I was nevertheless glad that she is finally able to overcome her fears and pursue a future together with Darcy.

The book is in parts really witty. The efforts of Elizabeth and Darcy’s family concerning the engagement lead to some really witty scenes and conversations (If you are ever in need of a fish joke you may look in this book ;-) ). I loved them all so very much and had many laugh-out-loud-moments.

I also enjoyed that there is not only a happily ever after for Elizabeth and Darcy, the Colonel also loses his heart and finds his love (again).

Besides the rake who was the initial for this engagement there are no real villains in the story. It is only Elizabeth’s determination to end this unwanted engagement, even when she develops feelings for Darcy, that keeps them from being a real couple.

The story was narrated by one of my favorite narrators, Harry Frost. I always like his performances very much because he manages to make a good book even better. I really like his skill to give every person their own, unique voice so that you are, in every scene and at every moment of the audiobook, able to tell who is talking to whom.
I really need to pay my respects to Harry Frost, because I managed to narrate all those witty scenes with a perfect seriousness. I, myself, was laughing so hard. And he also was excellent in the vulnerable moments of the story and was able to convey all feelings involved.

If you like to know how a Twelve Night ball and a lost slipper can lead to an unwanted betrothal and future happiness you should definitely listen to this excellent audiobook.

I highly recommend it.
