"First with your head and then with your heart." So says Hoppie Groenewald, boxing champion, to a seven-year-old boy who dreams of being the welterweight champion of the world. For the young Peekay, it is a piece of advice he will carry with him throughout his life.

Born in a South Africa divided by racism and hatred, this one small boy will come to lead all the tribes of Africa. Through enduring friendships with Hymie and Gideon, Peekay gains the strength he needs to win out. And in a final conflict with his childhood enemy, the Judge, Peekay will fight to the death for justice.

Opis od Audible

Why You Should Download This Audiobook: Good character dramas are best shared with others, like good wine on special occasions. Bryce Courtenay's wonderful story of a child coming of age in a country ripped apart by racism is such a vintage—rich and complex, an experience you'll want to talk about long after the last words are spoken.

I think I must of been about 10 when I read the abridged children's version of The Power of One. At the age of 17, I then read the original version. Now I'm 30 and still love it. The audiobook was really something special. Really pulls at the heart strings.

I love this story!

Set in a South Africa still smarting from the Boer War, tiny Peekay is sent to a harsh boarding school far from his beloved nanny and family. He experiences terrible bullying and no support but a chance encounter with a kind train conductor creates an obsession with boxing to defend himself. Left to his own devices by the adults around him, he is later lucky to encounter a second mentor in “Doc”, an eccentric German music professor and cactus lover.
This book is a mixture of coming of age, madcap adventures with unforgettable characters, history lesson (deep roots of apartheid, antagonism between Boer and English whites, impact of WW2 on South Africa and so much more), and A LOT on boxing. Not a sport I had previously held any fondness for, but the passion and techniques are described in such a way that I read them with interest (and learnt something!)
There were deeply moving and sad sections interspersed laugh out loud moments, and many characters will live on in my head.
“First with the head, then with the heart”.
PS. Excellently narrated by Humphrey Bower who does all the different accents so vividly.

Moving and unforgettable

I came across Bryce Courtenay through the narrator. I was such impressed by Humphrey Bower performance in Shantaram that I immediately started to look for his other works after I had finished it.

It is a fate. Now I'm looking forward to reading more by Bryce Courtenay, because his books are exactly the kind of a life story I am seeking for.

The Power of One takes place in South Africa and covers the period of time from the early 1930s up to the late 1940s, the birth of apartheid. It tells a touching and a moving life story of Peekay, an English boy, beautifully written and with a great insight into the cultural background of the country, and a lot of love to the people and the continent itself.

Excellent character development and a very strong story-line.

Despite my loving of Humphrey Bower narration and his astonishing skills to present all kind of dialects/accents in different voices, I have contradicted feelings about his narrating here. My own fault though. I shouldn't have picked up this audiobook immediately after Shantaram, too strong were the connection of Humphrey Bower to Lin (Shantaram).
Lin narrating a five year old boy took some time for me to get used to it.

Great!
