Acclaimed actress Claire Danes burnishes an epic story of heroes, gods, and monsters in a groundbreaking translation of The Odyssey, the first great adventure story in the Western literary tradition. When the wily warrior-king Odysseus sets off for home after the Trojan War, he doesn’t realize this simple undertaking will become a perilous journey of 10 years. Beset at every turn, he encounters obstacles, detours, and temptations—both supernatural and human—while his wife Penelope fends off would-be suitors desperate to take the throne.

Emily Wilson is the first woman to take on the daunting task of translating over 100,000 lines of a three-millennium-old poem from Ancient Greek to modern-day English. Her breathtaking rendition captures the poetic immediacy of the original text, while allowing listeners to experience The Odyssey with an honesty and directness few other versions have achieved. The result is a lean, fleet-footed translation that recaptures Homer’s “nimble gallop” and brings an ancient epic to new life. A fascinating introduction provides an informative overview of the Bronze Age milieu that produced the epic, the major themes of the poem, the controversies about its origins, and the unparalleled scope of its impact and influence.

This was my first time reading/listening to the Odyssey and it was great fun, but i have no other translation to compare to. the Translators note made me still understand what choices the translator made and see the piece in that light.
The Narrator had a calm voi e that was great to listen to

Wonderful retelling of the age-old epic by the first female translator Emily Wilson. Claire Danes is a pleasure to listen to and makes the thirteen hours pass in no time.

A fantastic take on a timeless classic

I love this story as it represents the best and worst human instincts. It has also suffered from multiple meddling, reminiscent of the Bible. This probably explains the endless accounts of how the ruling classes prepared their meals (slaughtering flocks of animals) and their bodies (wash, oil, don clean tunic, repeat). Maybe the main audience of this story, like that of today actually, was fascinated by displays of wealth, however (and even admirably) ill gotten. The obstacles on Odysseus’s voyage home which destroyed his ships and men and delayed his return home by 20 years seemed poetic justice. If he was so clever, why couldn’t he foresee that annihilating an entire generation of Ithaca’s upper class would expedite its collapse. I preferred Nolan’s version, sparing those who bent the knee to him.

A fantasy epic of Ancient Greece, with ruthless gods, kings and monsters and their slaughtering.

I‘m so happy I chose this translation, it was simply perfect! I have tried others, but this is by far the easiest to understand and just kept me going :)
