Nazafareen lives for revenge. A girl of the isolated Four-Legs Clan, all she knows about the King's elite Water Dogs is that they bind wicked creatures called daevas to protect the empire from the Undead. But when scouts arrive to recruit young people with the gift, she leaps at the chance to join their ranks. To hunt the monsters that killed her sister.
Scarred by grief, she's willing to pay any price, even if it requires linking with a daeva named Darius. Human in body, he's possessed of a terrifying power, one that Nazafareen controls. But the golden cuffs that join them have an unwanted side effect. Each experiences the other's emotions, and human and daeva start to grow dangerously close.
As they pursue a deadly foe across the arid waste of the Great Salt Plain to the glittering capital of Persepolae, unearthing the secrets of Darius's past along the way, Nazafareen is forced to question his slavery - and her own loyalty to the empire. But with an ancient evil stirring in the north, and a young conqueror sweeping in from the west, the fate of an entire civilization may be at stake.

Nazafareen, a girl from a group of nomades, the Four-Legs Clan, joins the Water Dogs to fight Druj and gets thrown into a world of violence, intrigues and betrayal, all while trying to figure out her power and do right by her daeva Darius.
I originally bought the book and audiobook because I really liked the cover design but I soon realised that the book has a lot more to offer than just that. From the very beginning I completely fell in love with Nazafareen and I was probably just as anxious as she was to meet her daeva. At first I wasn't sure what to think of the struggle she went through after she met and bonded Darius but if you think about it it makes sense. Ilyas however is a completely different story. At first I adored him and at the end I was so glad about what happened to him! Then there are Tijah and Myrri: I pray that we hear more of them in the 2nd and 3rd book. And I also hope that we learn a lot more about Darius, Victor and Delilah.
The Midnight Sea offers a good balance between action, bringing the story forward and just the right amount of romance that makes the readers heart fall in love with this book. I am very much looking forward to reading the second book.
