WINNER OF THE WORLD FANTASY AWARD FOR BEST NOVEL
A ruthless princess and a powerful priestess come together to rewrite the fate of an empire in this “fiercely and unapologetically feminist tale of endurance and revolution set against a gorgeous, unique magical world” (S. A. Chakraborty, author of the The City of Brass).
Exiled by her despotic brother, princess Malini spends her days dreaming of vengeance while imprisoned in the Hirana: an ancient cliffside temple that was once the revered source of the magical deathless waters but is now little more than a decaying ruin.
The secrets of the Hirana call to Priya. But in order to keep the truth of her past safely hidden, she works as a servant in the loathed regent’s household and cleaning Malini’s chambers.
When Malini witnesses Priya’s true nature, their destinies become irrevocably tangled. One is a ruthless princess seeking to steal a throne. The other a powerful priestess desperate to save her family. Together, they will set an empire ablaze.
Named one of the best books of 2021 by Publisher's Weekly, Library Journal, Booklist, and the New York Public Library.

As a worldbuilding enthusiast, the land of Ahirania and what lies beyond and beneath truly stood out to be between a sea of European inspired fantasy, or colonialism inspired non-european fantasy. And it's not just a fantasy version of India either, it feels unique despite but also because of cultural inspirations.
The magic and history of the world flows through every page of the story without relying on dry exposition.
The characters are all multilayered and following their thoughts and decisions was both natural and satisfying.
The few minor criticisms i could mention were so few, far between, and insignificant to my enjoyment that by the time of finishing this sentence i have forgotten most of them already.
If you enjoy fantasy, you will not be disappointed.
If you further enjoy passion, poetry and unapologetic healthy feminism, you will be delighted.
This is fantasy at its best

And wonderfully narrated.
A book written of the soul

Strongest selling point for me: Indian-inspired sapping fantasy! That's something new and has peaked my curiosity.
The story is told from several perspectives, but mainly from Malini's and Priya's point of view. There appear several fractions, each with their own goals and ideals, and it's very consistently told how they come into conflict or forge alliances.
I loved the slow burn romance which was very sweet (no explicit scenes).
One star deduction for the patriarchal culture. This is a fantasy novel, with strong focus on female characters, does it really need to be set in a misogyny world? The whole story could have worked in a non-patriarchal world, too.
Intriguing fantasy story

The character of the princess is wasted, she's pretty much useless for more than 2/3 of the story and even then all she has are hollow promises. If she actually fell in love towards the middle and actively had tried to change the plans of her allies to support the land of her love interest, then her inclusion would've made sense besides being the literal princess in distress.
Using big words for a very small story
