A killer walks among the rich and powerful. Who can the Magebreakers trust? Someone is killing the non-magical members of Senate houses - those who might one day be named Protector of the Realm. And that same someone is leaving behind messages for the Magebreakers beside symbols of the shadowy organization known as the Knights of the Emperor.

Under suspicion from the constabulary, Tane and Kadka are drawn into the investigation to prove their innocence. What they find is that Audish politics are as dangerous as any Porthaven back alley. Suddenly, they're surrounded by the most powerful figures in the realm, everyone with a different agenda. Telling allies from enemies has never been harder, but Tane and Kadka will have to find someone to trust if they're going to bring the killer to justice. Their lives - and the future of the Protectorate - depend on it.

First of all I wanted to like this. The worldbuilding is competent. I like Kadka and Thane, they make a good duo. The characterisation was good with the one of exception of the artifical Iskar-Debate where Thane suddenly lost empathy for the non-magical races. The book is well written and I like the narration. That should make for a great experience, but sadly it is mediocre. This book suffered from a similar problem like the first book. The mystery is way too obvious painfully so in this case. Thane appears dumb at times because he ignores all the obvious leads. And the scapegoat doesn't work at all here, because the case made is only compelling to the politically motivated not the reader. Sadly there also no reason given for Thane to be compelled, making it mind-boggeling. It is a huge flaw I hope the author can over come and be more clever in the next installment to make it truely joyfull.

There potential here

Just as the first book in the series, I loved it. A light and humorous book that Travis Baldree's narration made even better. Brilliantly narrated! I only wish there were audiobooks for the book 3 and 4 too.

Loved both the book and the audiobook.

Too bad, that this story is too predictable.
The world and the magic system are very interesting and have some potential. If the author get rid of his pattern I would like to read more about this world and the magic
