A would-be queen. A handsome young king. A perfect match…or is it?
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Selection series comes The Betrothed, a glittering royal romance sure to captivate her legion of loyal readers and lovers of courtly intrigue alike.
When King Jameson declares his love for Lady Hollis Brite, Hollis is shocked—and thrilled. After all, she’s grown up at Keresken Castle, vying for the king’s attention alongside other daughters of the nobility. Capturing his heart is a dream come true.
But Hollis soon realizes that falling in love with a king and being crowned queen may not be the happily ever after she thought it would be. And when she meets a commoner with the mysterious power to see right into her heart, she finds that the future she really wants is one that she never thought to imagine.
Continue the series
Only this time, our protagonist, Hollis, has almost no personality aside from being "optimistic". The performance exaggerates that problem by making Hollis sound like a heavily stereotypical teenaged cheerleader on a bad sitcom. The side-characters, be it the king, Hollis' parents or her closest friend, all seem to lack personality, as well. Cass' attempts at creating depth in the characters feels strangely forced and artificial to the point that most of them felt wooden and clunky.
The arc of suspense, too, is all but nonexistent. Cass tries to convey throughout the story that there is more to come, giving the audience hints as to what that may be - by lifting the stories metaphorical skirts. Very little is left for the imagination and when the "revelations" take place, it allows for little more than a "yeah, figures"-type of reaction.
Too bad. Selection was quite a bit more entertaining and well thought-out. This one might just be one of the few audiobooks I'll be returning to audible for a refund.
Disappointing
