James Holbrook
First published in 1855, Ten Years Among the Mail Bags gathers the narratives of James Holbrook, who spent a decade investigating thefts and breaches of trust in the American mail service. Drawn from his own diary, each sketch opens with a puzzle: a letter that never arrives, a package of money that vanishes, an employee above suspicion. From there, the listener follows the agent on a patient hunt for clues, guided by sharp judgment of character and a talent for setting the right trap. Holbrook's plain, earnest voice keeps every case immediate and human.
More than a collection of crime stories, the book is a vivid window into the early days of the postal system of a young and growing nation, when a single letter could carry a fortune, a secret or a family's last hope. Holbrook shows how ordinary people, entrusted with other people's correspondence, can be tempted into wrongdoing, and he writes with the earnest purpose of warning others away from the same path.
Part true-crime casebook, part social history, part moral cautionary tale, this bestseller of its day is often credited as an early influence on detective fiction. Brisk, vivid and full of period detail, it brings the 1850s to life one case at a time. A fascinating listen for fans of vintage mysteries, American history and real-life investigations, proving that the truth can be every bit as gripping as fiction.
