The astounding new novel from the master of science fiction

President Barack Obama’s summer reading choice

What would happen if the world were ending?

When a catastrophic event renders the earth a ticking time bomb, it triggers a feverish race against the inevitable. An ambitious plan is devised to ensure the survival of humanity far beyond our atmosphere. But unforeseen dangers threaten the intrepid pioneers, until only a handful of survivors remain…

Five thousand years later, their progeny – seven distinct races now three billion strong – embark on yet another audacious journey into the unknown, to an alien world utterly transformed by cataclysm and time: Earth.

A writer of dazzling genius and imaginative vision, Neal Stephenson combines science, philosophy, technology, psychology, and literature in a magnificent work of speculative fiction that offers a portrait of a future that is at once extraordinary and eerily recognizable. He explores some of our biggest ideas and perplexing challenges in a breathtaking saga that is daring, engrossing, and altogether brilliant.

I want to give this book 5 stars so bad, but I can’t. The story is amazing and really intense.

The speaker really ruined it for me though. The different accents he tries to go for are either plain wrong or really cringy. They also change for the same characters a lot during the book. I made myself listen to the whole thing anyway as the story is actually that good.

Excellent story with a few holes, poor speaker

I liked the first ⅔ of the book, the author takes his time to build the story. But I felt the last ⅓ as squeezed and rushed. Just like he wanted to come to an end with book, maybe the book company was already knocking at the door.

A couple of things seems to lack a satisfactory explanation. Just don't want to spoil things here.

But overall, if you like the Neal Stephenson, you will like this book.

sehr viele Details und ausgeprägte Charaktere die der Sprecher gut wiedergibt. In großen Bereichen etwas langatmig.

It's a great story, and, in contrast to others, I also liked the second part. In fact, I was even looking forward to listening to it, and it did not disappoint: It plausibly explains the concentration of the human race on breeding over the first millennia after Year 0, chiefly because of the utter absence of other/higher scientific priorities. It's not without flaws, though; the story has some illogical things going on, which I'll illustrate as follows (spoiler alert!): * Why don't they recycle dead bodies instead of jettisoning them off into space? * Why did no one confront the archies with the fact that the catastrophe was caused by JBF's spoof asteroid confusing the preambulator so that it couldn't deal with the real one? * How did the survivors at Cleft ever get back into their hacked computer system without any IT expert at hand? * Why does Moira's genetic equipment work on Cleft with little to no gravity, while it was packed away in the beginning exactly with the argument that it won't work without gravity? * Why does none of the Seven Eves suggest to genetically remove narcissism from the human genome or discuss at least the feasibility of it in the light of JBF's constant ramblings? * Why, even 5000 years later at a population of 3 billion humans, haven't those seven races mixed into an indistinguishable amalgamation as proposed by science today?

Well-written hard SF with some iconsistencies
