The gritty business of politics is not something we usually associate with the occult. But esoteric beliefs have influenced the destiny of nations since the time of ancient Egypt and China, when decisions of state were based on portents and astrology, to today, when presidents and prime ministers privately consult self-proclaimed seers. Politics and the Occult offers a lively history of this enduring phenomenon. Author and cultural pundit Gary Lachman provocatively questions whether the separation of church and state so dear to modern political philosophy should be maintained. A few of his fascinating topics include the fate of the Knights Templar and the medieval Gnostic Cathars, the occult roots of America and the French Revolution in Freemasonry, Gurdjieff and the swastika, Soviet interest in UFOs, the CIA and LSD, the Age of Aquarius, the millenarian politics that inform the struggle with Islamic terrorism, fundamentalism, and more.

The book is great, wonderfully researched and well written. The performance makes it however tough to follow. The performance is limited by the reader’s difficulty in pronouncing non-English names (and there are many!) and a slightly monotonous performance and staccato pace. It gets better after the first few chapters.

Great book, but difficult to listen to the reader

The book is extremely dense in content and tackles with „politics and the occult“ a very broad subject, which makes it both engaging and demanding. Given how dense the material is, the monotone narration makes it particularly difficult to follow at times.
The audio quality is not entirely consistent. In some places, it is quite noticeable that passages were recorded later and inserted into the original material.
The overall structure and guidance for the listener/reader feel somewhat weak. Given the breadth of the topic, clearer organization or stronger signposting would have significantly improved the experience and made the material more accessible.
Content-wise, however, the book is convincing. Even for listeners without much prior knowledge, Lachman makes a genuine effort to provide a solid introduction to the topic. The literature recommendations for further reading are particularly commendable.
One potential weakness may be the link to Jung that feels slightly overstretched, though this may just be my personal impression.

dense exploration of the politics and the occult with some production flaws
