'Exciting, pacy, authentic with outstanding characterisation' ANGELA MARSONS

When Dorothy Guildford is found stabbed to death in her home, all signs point to her husband, Peter. The forensic psychologist is convinced there's more to the case that meets the eye but Police Scotland are certain they have their man.

While DC Kirsty Wilson searches for evidence that will put Peter away for good, she is shocked to discover a link with a vast human-trafficking operation that Detective Superintendent William Lorimer has been investigating for months. But before they can interrogate him, Peter is brutally attacked.

With one person dead and another barely hanging on, the clock is ticking for DC Wilson and DSI Lorimer. And the stakes grow higher still when one of their own is kidnapped . . .©2018 Alex Gray Działania policyjne Hardboiled Kryminały Thrillery

Gray has a very old-fashioned view of men and women in relationships and can be derogatory towards parts of society. In most books of hers one overlooks these with a slight wonderment that editors let these things through because story is good. In this case there is too much of it to overlook. It is 2018, Gray, not 1954 where you are stuck!

Not her best

This story is misogynic (despite being written by a woman!), full of body shaming, xenophobic, ablist, etc. And the story itself was boring too. No suspense, unrealistic, one dimensional characters. I do not easily write bad reviews, because mostly there are some nice things in every story, and it might be a matter of taste. But this story actually upset me. I think a lot of the misogyny, xenophobia, ableism and body shaming was unintentional by the author, but a publisher should have picked up on it, and should have asked for a rewrite. As is, the story reflects badly on the publisher's too. Others told me that previous work from the author is enjoyable, so she must be capable if doing better. A shame that she was not helped by the publisher's to bring this to her usual standard.

The performance was far better than the story. The man had a pleasant voice and tried really hard to put some suspense into the story. The only confusing thing (to me) was that the inner monologues were in standard English, but the dialogues were in Scottish accent.

This is the first Alex Gray I couldn’t stop reading because I felt something very nasty was going to happen. The trafficking problem was completely intertwined with stories and developments of the characters. Alex Gray gives them all time to grow and so the have all grown on me as well. Such a beautiful story, thank you also for Joe Dunlop back as narrator !

Beautiful suspense
